Soft Luggage Question

Hi Everyone,

I don't want to drag up old differences of opinion but I have a question :innocent:

Has anyone ever had their soft luggage "broken" into, slashed and things stolen or stolen completely. Personal experiences only not just from ones heard from "Fat bloke down the pub"bier

I'll answer in the negative. I've had soft panniers and tank pannier bags (simple canvas ones) on my bike plus a small tank bag and rucksack now for 130,000 km of traveling Russia, Mongolia, most countries of Europe, all of East Africa, most of South America and currently in Central America.

That is a lot of days parked in town centres whist I explore, quite a few nights parked on the street outside hotels when there had been no other option, about 30 border crossings where I have to wander off and do my stuff. In all that time damage to the bags, things stolen - zero.

Of course I know it could happen but with commen sense and a dirty bike cover to throw over everything if I think it is appropriate I think the risk is very low and acceptable.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7887447800.jpg

Unless I'm camping, I never leave anything on the bike at night. I always pack using some kind of liner bag. Leave the empty pannier on the bike, lift out the liner, and schlep everything in to my lodging. Two trips maximum, no big deal.
