I should preface this review by explaining that I am a very light packer. This is because I am into vehicle dynamics, and I hate to weigh down a bike with a load of luggage. One key to packing lightly is selecting equipment that can be used more than one way. For example, a light jacket that can also be used as a long sleeved shirt. And for me, one set of footware must do all.

So my purpose in selecting these Oxtar Jupiter boots was to find footware so versatile that they could be used for riding and extensive walking. That of course means a compromise, and those who insist on boots with greater protection for riding will not be satisfied with the Jupiters.

When I first received these boots, I was not overly impressed. I expected more ankle protection, not just soft padding, and some hard edges around the ankles made the boots uncomfortable after a half day. But after wearing them for a couple of half days, the hard edges broke in, and they became completely comfortable.

Having worn these boots exclusively for the past 3-1/2 weeks while on tour through the U.S., Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, I am very satisfied with them. They offer a bit more protection than a high top sneaker, with semi-hard heel and toe guards. And they are as comfortable as a quality pair of high top sneakers when riding or walking all day. They handled 95 degree temperatures without making my feet sweat or expand (probably due to the Gore-Tex construction). And they were comfortable riding all night at 39 degrees when my hands were nearly too cold to unbuckle my helmet.

Aesthetically, they are very good looking, a cross between a sneaker and a dress boot. I believe they would pass without notice with a business suit, as the shifter pad and everything is black, except for a grey outline around the laces. There is a Velcro-secured shin strap that covers over the upper laces. A quick sponging (I swear I never used a hotel towel) cleaned them up quickly at the end of each riding day.

I only have a month use on them, but so far no signs of wear or structural weakness.

Highly recommended as a "one boot must do all" or as a comfortable around-town boot for those riders who would select something more heavy duty for serious riding.
