Earphones???
 

Hey

Relatively new to biking and having just wrecke dmy ears on a two hour hourney with standard headphones I feel compelled to ask if anyone has any recommendations for bog standard headphones for an MP3 player that are comfortable to wear when you have the helmet on??

Not looking for a full helmet £100 system job, just something that works

i have done both of these methods, mainly to hear the GPS but works just as good for the ipod;
1.canibalise a pair of the big (40mm?ish) old fashioned walkman headphones and glue a bit of velcro(the stiff hook side) to the back. if youre lucky your helmet will have room inside to stick these in without pressing too hard on your ears

2. get some proper helmet speakers (aerostitch did them, 'helmet blasters' or something? got mine on ebay £15) and put these in your lid, same as above or even under the lining if you want a neater, permanent job.

number 2 works best because they are designed for the job, being proper 'speakers' while the walkman 'headphones' are much lower output because they are supposed to be pressed up against your ear, something that is very hard to do.

i currently have these in my lid, the spare cable is neatly coiled up and hot glued under the helmet lining so only the jack is visible on the side. i then have a coiled/curly extension lead that goes from the helmet to whatever. so i can unplug without having metres of lead dangling from me when i get off.

Westone earphones
 

I've used Westone earphones for years. They are made of that spongy plastic earplug stuff and act as earplugs when the ipod is switched off. They are a bit expensive (can't remember how much) but are brilliant. If you decide to buy them be sure to get extra plugs, they are very effective ear cleaners and get pretty grotty.

I'm sure there are numerous posts on this subject on this site. Reckon it'd be worth a search.

I'm using Shure in ear phones with a foam earplug. Works a treat! I also have noise killing phillips I've experimented with. With the shure foam they're ok. For me the Shure's are more than worth the 99$ I paid for them, the Phillips are'nt worth the 50 or so $.

I ve tried everything and the only ones I would swear my last cent on are made by w w w . u l t i m a t e e a r . c o m ( i could be wrong with the spelling of the address but the company is called ultimate ear)
you have to send them a mould of your ear which you get pretty cheap from an audiologist.
they are price, about 170 GBP but im telling you , you will not regret it and will save money in the long run

The only one's to buy are from http://www.greenleopard.co.uk/ they do in-ear ipod ones that come with thier silicone ear protectors so fit exactly like they should as they are bespoke and at very low cost.

Ultimate Ear
 

I bought the ultimate ear ones from last year's UK HU meeting, the guy had a setup inside the bar.
I think they were about £160, and I got a set with earphones, a 'blank' set, and the moulds for my money. I find that as they are a complete seal in the ear, and are made from shiney plastic, that the inside of my ears begin to get hot and itch after a couple of hours use, and I have to stop, take them out and say "Ahhhh, that's better"
But they do work extremely well, reducing the outside sound level by 75% or so, but you can still hear your engine and everyone shouting 'Dozy Ba***rd' as you cut them up. the earphone set come with a 3.5mm stereo socket.

I use Etymotic Research, Inc. - ER6i Isolator Earphones. They are really good if u like earplugs. You can use foam types as an earplug and they are as good as an earplug.

Sennheiser also have a range that I found very good with a rubber plug.
After 3 months heavy use the rubber no longer attenuated the windnoise out

looks like you have some better alternatives above.

Etymonic ER-6 work the best for me. All day comfort, easy to clean, and the skinny wires are far more durable than they look.
