Avon Distanzia tyres

I bought a new set of Avon Distanzia's last week for my 3AJ Tenere. I got the 'T' rated ones rather than the 'H' (which are suited to heavier bikes/loads). The Distanzia replaces the Gripster.

These tyres are fantastic on the road, offer plenty of grip and feel. They don't break away suddenly like my old Metzler Enduros, and are confience-inspiring in the wet.

Having said all that I expect they'd be pretty crap in sand or mud due to the tread pattern. However, Ted Simon has some fitted to his GS and says they copped a pounding on rocky, potholed roads and he didn't have a problem.

The Dr.Greg Frazer rode across the old USSR on a set and said they were great. He was on a Kawi KLR. I put one on the rear of my BMW based on that recommendation. Good traction on gravel sand and grass. Bill.

I have found that they are pretty good on road and do OK on gravel roads but, they don't do so hot when fully laden and driving on loose gravel - think I may try a different tyre based on this as I've had my front tyre start to slide out from under on a steep downhill in these conditions - made me a bit nervous...Might go back to the TKC's...or try some Anakees (SP?).

I've got Distanzia's on my CCM644, but it's set up as a supermoto.

On the road they are excellent. Good grip, lots of warning if they're going to let go and long lasting. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

On gravel they are a bit twitchy and can be a bit exciting. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif I've not had them on serious dirt yet but the feel from the gravel is that I think I'd rather swap to my knobblies on big dirt wheels. I wouldn't even consider them for mud or sand.

As to whether they are a suitable compromise - dunno, but they've gotta be better than road tyres.
