Amphibear: AROUND THE WORLD BY AMPHIBIAN CAR

Half-Safe

A guy called Ben Carlin did it in the 50s too, using a modified Jeep.
Took him 10 years. Quite an amazing story.

Brilliant Chris, thanks for letting us know! It's interesting that Amphibear used old music, in the style of the Half-Safe project. Would love to know why Eleanor bailed. They say the Atlantic leg was where all the mistakes were made... oops!

Makes all our journey's seem rather tame, eh? ?c?

Chris Scott 1 Dec 2013 15:52

I've read the books about Half Safe - the 1950s original, the one republished by his old school, plus another by a bloke who travelled with BC from Japan to Alaska, tellingly titled 'Once a Fool'.

I think Ben Carlin was a hard bloke to live with - especially when cooped up in a tiny Jeep cabin during a mid-Atlantic gale.

I would call that first stage full of 'lessons' rather than 'mistakes' as what they were doing was unknown. For it's time it's the most incredible overland vehicle journey I've ever heard of.

Looks like the Amphibear is just setting off today from Senegal for Brazil.

He is waiting for a replacement panel (?) and some paperwork done then he will be off.
It seems that he will be crossing solo, do I understand correctly that his co-pilot is not joining?

Gipper 1 Dec 2013 20:33

Amazing setup and very brave to attempt an Atlantic crossing, hope he gets good weather and calm seas. The current day attempt shows how tough the original trip was in the 50's

Habari 2 Dec 2013 20:22

He just sailed with just enough fuel to reach Cabo Verde...

tacr2man 2 Dec 2013 21:21

I feel rather concerned as to the outcome of this , it seems a rather odd route to take on a rtw trip , hes either very confident in the capabilities of the vehicle , or not a realist . I hope it goes OK for him ! JMHO

Senno 3 Dec 2013 04:33

Hope he's bearing up OK

Looking at the blog hes used 210L to get halfway from St Louis to the cape verde islands , how is he going to be able to carry enough fuel to get to South America ? :(

Habari 7 Dec 2013 13:49

Well, he has reached Cabo Verde... Quite amazing...

Where is he intending to go next , as its about 2000miles to S America from there , and I cant see any islands on the way , he says he can make 120 miles per day , so that would be 16+ days ? :helpsmilie:

Habari 21 Dec 2013 15:23

He is off again heading toward Brazil...

tacr2man 21 Dec 2013 16:16

May his God go with him !
