Shipping from South Africa to Oz

I haven't found anything in the archive yet. Has anybody shipped or flown her/his bike to Australia?

I'd like to either ship it from Durban to Perth (preferably) or fly it from Joburg to any destination in Oz.

Thanks in advance!
Hans

Flying Joburg to

I'm going the other way - Sydney to joburg.

Ring Qantas and SA Airways - your after theur respective freight offies in Joburg. Get pricing to Perth - uncrated if you can - and teh cost of teh dangerous goods documents. My costs indicative are $7 pre kg ... should be cheaper to Perth -= less distance.

We are shipping our bikes from Norway to South Africa using DHL. If they can ship between Norway and South Africa, they would certainly be able to do Australia.

As for costs, DHL was half the price of the only other firm I could find in Norway, willing to do the Job.

Thx guys. I just got an offer for 40 ZAR per kilo (roughly 7 USD) for SA Airways and 35 ZAR (ca. 5 USD) with Air Mauritius plus 1.000 ZAR (ca. 140 USD) additional costs for both airlines for export documentation, dangerous goods, fumigation of the crate.

Reckon thats quite expensive. I'll try DHL tomorrow.

Frank, how about swapping bikes ;-) Would save us a great deal of trouble

Yep.

Think I'd get the better part of the deal - trip
SA throught to Victoria Falls, back down to Cape Town, up the west coast and on to the Isle of Man for teh Tourist Trophy races, out for the British HU meeting then travell east wards to India. And then fly back home. About a year.

Thought about buying a bike here?

Vaufi 19 Apr 2006 12:14

No, reckon I'll stick to my old mare - we got so used to each other...

So you're going right through Africa? I'll be busy visiting NAM and northern ZA in the next three months after lots of km's in the Cape & Lesotho. Was lots of fun! Great mountain passes & lots of gravel roads. Beautiful. Will leave for Oz beginning of August.

As soon as I've got all infos on the transport I'll post them here.

There is a meeeting on Sat 12th August about two quick days travel north of Perth - Gasgoyne Junction. If you can make that there should be between 60 and 200 adventure bike riders there ...

Vaufi 22 Apr 2006 15:15

Thx Frank, hope I can make it in time. I've booked my flight already & shall arrive on the 4th. Hope to get my bike thru customs fast enough. Seems to be quite a hassle in Oz...

The best quote to get my bike from Johannesburg to Perth/AUS was given by MMA Consolidators (freight forwarders). Calculated price for 250kg on a pallet (organised from BMW Pretoria) is roundabout ZAR 10,000. Not exactly cheap :-( In USD ca. $ 1,400 at the current rate.

This includes DG cert and fumigation. I gather the Aussies expect the latter.

If flying - Johanasburg - Perth. Both are major air ports and have direct flights. You need to look for direct flights as they are usually cheaper for cargo.

Vaufi 19 Jul 2006 19:19

Yep. By air from Johburg, by ship Durban.

Gummikuh 19 Jul 2006 22:14

Hi Vaufi!

Another question.... you take the same flight as your moto? And how much cost the flight for you?

The bike might take the same filght as you do. Then agian it might not.

Ceaper flight for you may be indirect flights ... so you may end up on a different route to the bike.
EG Sydney to Joburg - direct flight would probably be cheapest for the bike. For me though chaepst flight is through singapore .. with a 4 hour wait around midnight... saves some $600?

So it all depends ... and will change with time ...
