Shipping from South Africa to Oz
I haven't found anything in the archive yet. Has anybody shipped or flown her/his bike to Australia?
I'd like to either ship it from Durban to Perth (preferably) or fly it from Joburg to any destination in Oz. Thanks in advance! Hans |
Flying Joburg to
I'm going the other way - Sydney to joburg.
Ring Qantas and SA Airways - your after theur respective freight offies in Joburg. Get pricing to Perth - uncrated if you can - and teh cost of teh dangerous goods documents. My costs indicative are $7 pre kg ... should be cheaper to Perth -= less distance. |
We are shipping our bikes from Norway to South Africa using DHL. If they can ship between Norway and South Africa, they would certainly be able to do Australia.
As for costs, DHL was half the price of the only other firm I could find in Norway, willing to do the Job. |
Thx guys. I just got an offer for 40 ZAR per kilo (roughly 7 USD) for SA Airways and 35 ZAR (ca. 5 USD) with Air Mauritius plus 1.000 ZAR (ca. 140 USD) additional costs for both airlines for export documentation, dangerous goods, fumigation of the crate.
Reckon thats quite expensive. I'll try DHL tomorrow. Frank, how about swapping bikes ;-) Would save us a great deal of trouble Hans |
Let us know the quotes from the different companies...

Think I'd get the better part of the deal - trip SA throught to Victoria Falls, back down to Cape Town, up the west coast and on to the Isle of Man for teh Tourist Trophy races, out for the British HU meeting then travell east wards to India. And then fly back home. About a year. Thought about buying a bike here? |
No, reckon I'll stick to my old mare - we got so used to each other...
So you're going right through Africa? I'll be busy visiting NAM and northern ZA in the next three months after lots of km's in the Cape & Lesotho. Was lots of fun! Great mountain passes & lots of gravel roads. Beautiful. Will leave for Oz beginning of August. As soon as I've got all infos on the transport I'll post them here. |

Thx Frank, hope I can make it in time. I've booked my flight already & shall arrive on the 4th. Hope to get my bike thru customs fast enough. Seems to be quite a hassle in Oz...

The best quote to get my bike from Johannesburg to Perth/AUS was given by MMA Consolidators (freight forwarders). Calculated price for 250kg on a pallet (organised from BMW Pretoria) is roundabout ZAR 10,000. Not exactly cheap :-( In USD ca. $ 1,400 at the current rate.
This includes DG cert and fumigation. I gather the Aussies expect the latter. |
Hi!
We need this direction too in April next Year... It's better to go Durban- Perth or Johannesburg- Perth? Greetings from Germany Werner |

Yep. By air from Johburg, by ship Durban.

Hi Vaufi!
Another question.... you take the same flight as your moto? And how much cost the flight for you? Greetings from Germany Werner |

Ceaper flight for you may be indirect flights ... so you may end up on a different route to the bike. EG Sydney to Joburg - direct flight would probably be cheapest for the bike. For me though chaepst flight is through singapore .. with a 4 hour wait around midnight... saves some $600? So it all depends ... and will change with time ... |
Hi Frank!
Thank's for your help! We start in Sebtember from Germany and in April we want to stay in SA. Than we have a look..... Greetings from Germany Werner |
Hi Rubber-Q ;-)
my flight is ZAR 4,737 (just under 500 Euros) one-way from JHB to Perth. Incidently the bike's going with the same airline (Mauritius Air), but most probably not on the same flight. The travel agent (Rennies in S.A.) doesn't offer additional services like organising the bike transport anymore. They used, but that was years ago. I just saw your latest post. One month for SA is far too short! I just spent 4 months travelling in SA, NAM, Lesotho & Botswana and felt it to be rather short. If you need any tips, send me an email. |
Hi Vaufi!
Sorry i can't write you a e-mail ... i can't find your Adress My adress is werner-steffens ätt web.de Greetings Werner |
From SA to Aus - Shipping
I am looking at shipping my Harley to Aus to be there in end-April 08. Does anyone know if the Aussies are strict on noize (I have a screaming eagle exhaust). Also any other advice on shipping?

Touring Ozz
I intend touring Ozz, then returning to SA. Another question. I intend riding from Melbourne to Perth on the coastal route (anticlockwise) and am planning to do this in 6 weeks. Question 1. Will this give enough time to enjoy some of the nicer places without having to spend too much time travelling? 2. I understand that the speed limit in Aus is 100kph - can one push this a little higher, say 130kph, in the northern, more remote parts? 3. Is petrol easily available every 200km between Georgetown-Darwin-Derby-Coral Bay-Perth?

Speed limits
The speed limits vary from road to road - and even along the one road.
In the Northern Teritory the upper speed imit is 130 km/h, the rest of OZ has 110km/h. Under those limits we have 100,90,80,70,60,50,40 ... km/h. How far can you 'push' this ? That depends on the person who catches you! Police Highway Patrol people are more likely to book you than regular Police. That said .. you are unlikely to be booked for up to 10km/h over the limit. But 1 km/h more and you are likely to be booked. Except in Victoria where 1km/h over the limit will have you booked. Oh .. 'we' have fixed speed cameras .. some have signs, some don't .. best to do the limit +0, around them .. ------------------ Buy the Hemma Australian Motrocycle Atlas - that has perol staions marked where it matters .. and distances so you can figure out your travelling. It even has a guide to good rides. Hemma Maps Think 300km range is required travelling south from Broome (west coast)? |
Thanks This is very useful. You did not comment about the issue of time to do the trip?

Work out how far it is, how far you travel in a day, divide the total distance by the daily travel, multiply by 7/6 (evey sevnth day off) and you have the days you think you'll require.. And I'd allow a lazy day or several for the holiday feel. Up to you really. The longer you can take, the more you'll see and experience. |
