Germany to Phnom Penh or Singapore
 

Greetings!

As I am moving to Cambodia for a year or so, I am considering taking my bike with me under carnet de passage regime (yes, I know Cambodia does not use CdP but apparently it makes life easier, especially if I plan to ride around Asia). Not sure if it is worth all the hassle but why let my bike rust in a garage when I could be using it for wonderful trips in Cambodia neighbouring countries.

Air (I'm not that far from Frankfurt or Stuttgart) is probably going to be easiest in terms of paperwork at the receiving end and given the high port fees I have been reading about, perhaps not that outrageously expensive. Ideally I would of course like to pick it up in PNH airport although Singapore would be a second best option.

Have already contacted a number of shipping agents, some of which can ship the bike as is and others that need it fully boxed. Prices quotes I am getting are around EUR1000 for air to SIN.

Is there anyone out there who has experience shipping (air/sea) bike to Phnom Penh or Singapore? I would love to read your story, especially anything re. providers used, pricing and custom clearance etc.

:welcome: to the HUBB. You've come the right place for all your questions.

You're right Cambodia is a great place to ride (well in the dry season at least). As for the rest of SEAsia, you will find Thailand, Malaysia and Laos easy but forget Vietnam (with your own bike).

I have shipped to Malaysia KL with Clasquin a french company but this was from Sydney in 2008. I would avoid shipping to Singapore as it is more difficult for customs than Bangkok or KL.

Have you checked the Trip Transport DB here on HU. Have a look there first that should help with getting you more estimates.:thumbup1:

I shipped from Switzerland to Singapore October 2010. Port handling fees and stuff are horrible expensive there. My suggestion, ship to Bangkok (a short ride from Cambodia away). Driving up from Kuala Lumpur, southern Thailand and so on was not that interesting if you're not too much into beach activities. Search the HUBB for "Transpeed" or send me a pm, I can give you a contact of a reliable shipper in BKK.

another thing: except from Singapore, neither Malaysia nor Thailand was interested in my CdP But I could use it in Laos - a great country to visit by bike! HIGHLY recommendable!!!

just used my Carnet to enter Cambodia. no questions, no additional 'fees', just stamps, signatures and smiles.
its great to ride here, although its getting really really stinking hot at the moment and we've been told that it will continue to increase until the rains come.
its bearable but only just and we try to be off the road by 13:00 at the latest and dont venture out again until 15:30. so its early morning starts - best bit of the day anyway!
