Angolan Visa - South to North

We're four european going to travel from Cape Town to Europe, and are hopefully going to drive the West Coast. Has anybody managed to get an angolan visa without getting it from its "Home"embassy? The angolan embassy in Stockholm are pretty strickt about limits and validity, and are therefore not helping at all.

Or does anybody know how, or who to ask about, shipping ourselves and our vehicle from Namibia to Gabon? And thereby avoiding sadly all contact with Angola.

As far as I can tell from recent posts on this subject, Angola visas are, if not impossible, then realy realy hard to come buy. It seems that many suggest that you just get a 5 day transit visa at the border. Crossing Angola in those 5 days is presumebly an impossible task. When exiting Angola again, you may be charged a fine for each day overstayed. I think there was one post that said they were not charged any fine, simply because the border official was well aware that making the crossing in 5 days is an impossebility. If memory serves, those who did get fined, payed something like $10 per day overstayed and weren't hassled too much about it.

These reports mostly came from people going from north to south. But I pressume that visa wise, we are talking about similar situations. Maybe just showing up at the border is your best option?

As for transport "around" Angola, I realy have no idea what options you have.

Greetings,

We are leaving from Cape Town on Dec 1st up the west coast and have done quite a bit of research on the Angola subject.

As we stand now, we'll get the visa in Windhoek as this is supposedly the easiest. Otherwise according to a traveller who passed through there recently, he got the visa at the border (north - south) and just made it through in the specified time on an XJ900 (road bike!!) - others that overstayed their visas apparently were not charged a fee... but I guess that depends on what mood the border guard is in that day...

We got some info (also visa's) on my blog african westcoast adventure - enjoy the trip, maybe we see you along the way!!

Have good one!

As much I know you can't get visa on border, even transit visa requires some hassle at an embassy.

Use search function to search for "angola visa", there should be quite a lot of informaiton on the subject.

Nothing is sure with Angolan visa. In Cabinda Immigration Office I tried to extend/make multi entry visa to enter mainland Angola and first they told no problem, then made copies of my documents and then after waiting told be everything is fine -- I don't need extension as *one* 5 day transit visa I already have for Cabinda is good for both Cabinda and Angola and no problem if I overstay, they said. What a BS! And that comes from main Immigration Office, not someone at the border or police. Ok, if you speak Portuguese you may have better luck. :cool4:

I'm not to sure on going north the stoties some time conflict and the situation changes.
The info I have is that you can get a double entry in SA (Pretoria I think) Windhoek is also a reasonable possiblity.
Going south
Don't even try anywhere else than Matadi. We had help from the Dutch consul apersonal friend of the Ambassador in Gabon and that didn't help.
Don't even think about Pointe Noire unless you want to run the gauntlet on one of the worst roads in Africa to Brazza. The road isn't even your main problem. (Ninjas)
If things don't change and you can't acquire a double entry going south go via Lope Park and Francisville in Gabon to Brazza then Kinshasa to Matadi (The ferry is an experiance you will never forget!!!)

5 Days and counting

5 Day visa only, $5 per day fine.

Thats the way to do it.

I wasn't fined, they looked at my helmet and knew what I'd just been through and stamped me through without question.

Help us out guys, the transit visa in Matadi. Where do you get it?. Is it at the border post or is there a consulate in Matadi itself.

Thanks if you can clarify this for us please. Going this way next year.

Angola embassy in Lome

Today I went to Angola embassy in Lome. I talked with security man because of ambassader out until next monday. Ha said I need 2photo, PPT copy, US$30, letter from angola(friends or company....) to apply for visa. letter is impossible for me, so I asked security man what should I do ? He said there is possibility to get visa without letter, but I need some negotiate, talking with ambassader. If I get visa here, it is good news for overlanders from north to south. If not, I will go straight to Matadi, but I will try here. see you next week...

Great News from Libreville, Gabon!!!

1st of November Angola change their tourismvisa regulations. Now you can get Visa to "both" Angola(s) on neightbour countries. So Pointe-noire and Matadi will give you visas without any hassling.

So Angola visas are available on neighbour countries.

We are going now to Pointe-noire... We will inform then.
