Direct route from Nema to Timbouctou

Does somebody have details about the direct route from Nema/Oualata to Timbouctou (north of lake Faguibine). Does it mean starting from Nema and driving cross country to Timbouctou? Or is there something of a piste, passing some well known wells along the way?
Thanks,
Gerbert

Hi

And it´s safe? I think,it isn't. In 2004 some problems with outlaws

Before leaving Nema, ask to the police, but attention to the extortion...

The solution will be to follow Bassikounou, Nampala, Leré, Tombouctou.

We made it directly from Nema to Timbouctou, taking the route north of Lac Faguibine. Two weeks ago. It took four days in our two Toyota lanbdcruisers LJ70. Nema, Nbeiket Alhouach, Basriye, Timbouctou. One of the many smuglersroutes in this area, although we did not see any other traffic. The route was a bit disappointing, not very spectacular scenery. And many stories about bandits and Belouar (Algerian leader of GSPC). But we noticed nothing. Entry formalities in Timbouctou, in Nema Police and customs did not want to stamp our passport, so we left without stamps.

Direct route from Nema to Timbouctou

hi Gerbert,

you say it took four days for you, but how km ? do you have wpt ?

you can join me at boz_39@hotmail.com

I only have the following waypoints:

Achemmim: 16,42 6,57
Nbeiket el Ahouach: 16,53 5,43
Basriye: 17,03 4,50
Well (I do not know the name): 17,13 3,37

It's about 500 km in total. A lot of sand, so almost double gasoil consumption compared to tarred road. I suppose it can be quit muddy in the wet season. The landscape was very green in october, because it rained a lot this year.

Thank you for the waypoints.
I saw the track on maps except for the part of the last well to tombouctou.
Maybe we try to pass by Ras el ma and to follow northern bank of the lake.

I think driving directly along the north side of the lake from Ras el Ma to Timbuktu is a good idea. The landscape is more beautifull there, I read in the Lonely Planet. We wanted to do that route, but did not find the right piste near Basriye, and therefore decide to continue north-east.

Hi Christophe,

I'm planning also to do Nema-Timbuctu directly in middle January 2007.
We will be a single 4WD with 2 or 4 persons.
When are you planning to go?
If your in a single car and if the timing is OK, maybe we could join for this crossing?

Cheers,
José

Hi,

We are doing the Nema Timbuktu route on two bikes (KTM 640s) in late December (hoping to arrive by the 31st Dec). If you are planning on doing this a bit earlier than mid Jan we would welcome the company.

We would also buy you plenty of beers if you could carry our extra fuel!

cheers
Matt
