trip to europe. how much will it cost?
 

Hey everyone, I am planning a trip to europe starting in holland and going through germany - poland - czech rep - austria - italy (rome) - france (paris) then home through channel tunnel,

I would like to carry on up to norway and get the ferry over from there but I don't know if I will have enough money or time, can anyone give me some idea of how much it will all cost?

I will have about £3000 (hopefully) and 5 weeks to do it in. is this enough?

Depends for a start how good your bike is on fuel.

I generally work on 100miles to £10 which at £1 litre would be about 45Mpg. I know my bike does more than that but then it allows for the roads you go down that you didnt put in on the route planner.

Then what class of accomodation do you want. I would say £10 night camping.

For the upcoming trip to Morocco I am looking at £30 day for Food & Drink.

Put your average costs in and it will work out roughly how far your money will get you.

east europe is cheaper
 

west europe and especially the major cities will be more expensive. But if you're into traveling frugally you'll still most likely be able to do everything you want. Find cheap hostels and places that you like and then settle there for a bit if you like, i once shared a huge spanish home with three local people i met for 100 bucks a month. big vaulted ceiling, giant tile walkways and own sleeping arrangements. The deals are out there it's just a matter of finding them. May i suggest getting to east europe where you'll find you're money will go a lot farther - croatia, czech rep, slovenia, serbia/montenagro, places like that. good luck and have fun

The mrs and me travel about 3000 mls around Europe every year, mainly Spain, pretty much don't worry about money i.e. if we see a nice hotel and want to stop there we do. The last trip in 08 cost approx 3k and that was a KTM Superduke and Triumph 675 covering 3200 mls over a 14 day period TOTAL including ferry to Spain for two bikes, new tyres ( 4 off ) before we left, no camping.
With your budget I would say no problemo, have fun :funmeteryes:

Im only just down the road from you in Wallsend !

Anyway, ive done 2 europeon trips. Apart from the ferry (DFDS very expensive but very close to get to).
I work on roughly £50 per day, thats camping and cooking for myself.
I work on, 100 miles = £10 so 300 miles per day = £30
£10 for campsite and £10 for food and beer (usually find local supermarket and do a quick shop for tea, breakfast and sarnie for next day.

-Oh God, yes! I was spending about £430/wk camping 95+% of the time and eating out 60+%, on less than a tank of fuel a day (65-70mpg). Camping in Italy (and to a lesser extent Austria) is at least 15Euro/night (compared to 8 for France/most everywhere else). So on your budget you could be very comfortable:thumbup1:.

Should have a luxurious 5 weeks with that budget and this site will help with some accomodation with friendly bikers in the countries you plan to visit. I always take a bottle or two and some choccies for the family, which goes down well.

We always start or finish with a night in the bikers hotel in Ostende and well recommend it. See : Motorhotel Groenedijk - Oudenburg, Oostende

Pottsy, with your figures on camping at about £12 a night and half a tank of fuel at £10 that leaves £39 for food and drink, I can forward AA's number over to you or Weightwatchers :eek3:

6 week/8000 mile tour of pretty much all of Europe including Slovenia,Croatia,Hungary,Romania and Slovakia on 2 bikes(XL600LM & Pegaso 650) in August and September last year,camping wild as much as possible(realistically 50% of the time) = just under £2000.
How? Prep bikes properly beforehand = no breakdowns.Cook for yourself,don't eat out.Camp wild as much as possible.Choose a bike that is economical.
You don't need to eke out your food,just buy sensibly.Tinned food costs more than fresh.Rice and Pasta is cheap and can be turned into a tasty meal by adding a few veg and bit of meat.Wine is cheap also,opting for the "table wine" in plastic bottles(resealable caps) or cartons,not glass bottles with fancy labels.Don't be snobbish...80p a litre local red is much nicer than the £3 a bottle stuff we get here in UK even if it does come in a "squash bottle".
And the £2000 we spent DIDN'T include our ferry tickets (LD Lines)....

And this was in the summer when the Euro was reasonable! The way i see it i save on the accom but eat well, and this figure includes ferry fares (to France, Corfu, Santorini, etc), insurances for out-of-EU countries, and activities (diving).Oh, and a new exhaust when it blew in France. Wondered why my preload needed upping :rofl:

thanks everyone thats great advice I feel alot more confedent about the trip now. I will be going on my triumph legend, havn't done many miles on it yet but I'm sure it'll do the job, will be camping most of the time so I think that will help funds.
