Mefo sport explorer tyres a review.
Just brief review of some excellent Tyres I have been using for the last 2,500 miles. The tyres are Mefo sport Explorer made in Germany and supplied in the uk by the lovely people at Zen Overland who are very helpful and post out the tyres quickly (i have no connection to them bye the way). My bike is an older Bmw r80gs, in the past i have used mainly TKC or Metzeler Sahara 3, but have also used Mitas for a period of time. The Mefo have a tread patter similar if a little less rugged looking than the TKC, this gives a much improved ride quality on the road, where the tyres run smoother (no vibration) and offer far better grip in the dry and substantially better in the wet. The Mefo are by far the best tyre I have tried between the three named above. On the motorways they were smooth and no wandering or drifting, on b and c road through the Dales they tracked really well inspiring deep cornering better than the metzeler and in the rain they maintained hiogher levels of grip than Metzeler and far higher than the TKC. I did some Trails mainly loose gravel and wet stone surfaces where in these conditions the tyres were as good as the TKC and seemed to offer excellent grip on wet grass areas (usually slippy on the Metezeler) I have not tried the Mefo on mud etc at this time. The Mefo have very strong three ply side walls which should help to prevent nips in the inner tube but does make fitting a bit tighter than usual. The tread wear at 2,500 mile is excellent with no flattening out of the rear pattern and well over half the depth of tread pattern left. simply the best all round tyre I have used in a long time with no disadvantages on the roaad and excellent light trail ability. They cost about £120 the pair, but Zen do various ranges of Mefo to fit More powerful bikes or for more dirt orientated use only.
