Fitting Tubeless Tire on TubeType Rim
 

Hi,

I would like to have your opinion about putting a TubeLess tire on a TubeType Rim.

I know you can do. It is not against manufacturers specification but I'm concerned about the difficulty of putting on and off the tire in case of a flat.

Can someone comment about his experience on putting TubeLess tires by his own.

The main difficulty is the rim of a tubless system - it has a more pronounced lip.

You should have little trouble on a tube type rim. Do use a tube, and derate the speed rating of the tyre by one level.

The lip is on the TL rim. Since the tube type rim doesn't have the lip there is no problem. I've fitted hundreds of TL tyres on TT rims when I worked as a mechanic. No problems at all.

The inverse is also possible, putting a TL or TT tyre with tube on a TL rim. I don't recommend that, cause you are getting the disadvantages of both systems without getting any of the advantages.

I have no choice than to fit tubeless tyres with tubes on my bike (Triumph Thunderbird). Have had no problems over the past 45,000 kms

i have "tubeless" sportsbike tyres on my XT600E supermotard, (with spokes of course, you must have a tube!)
no ill effects, the tyres stay on fine and changes have been no problem.

I'm sure you already thought of this, but it hasn't been mentioned yet. Tubeless rims must be sealed to hold air. BMW Akront or Beahr? rims have the spokes to the outside to acomplish this. I recently had a wheel built for my bike by Woody's WheelWorks. The Sun rim has the standard spokes(mine are oversize S/S) to the centre of the rim and they are sealed with silicone to prevent leaking. You will also need the special vent which is held in place to the rim with a nut and sealed with an o-ring. Otherwise you can remove the vent and run a tube safely. Tubeless rims have a "safety bead" which is a lower bead to the inside that locks the tire in place to prevent loosing a seal in the event of high sideways load, like hard cornering or off-roading. I beleive only Beahr and Sun produce their rims with the safety bead, and Woody will only silicone seal these rims for that reason. Akront has unfortunately gone out of business.
