OK, its not Ortlieb - but nor is the price!

However it looks and sounds similar but at a quarter of the price.

At £6.99 I will go and look at my local Aldi this Sunday

I bought one last time around to complement my expensive brand ones. It seems ok but the opening is much cheaper style although it looks similar initially. I don't think it would be as waterproof. I haven't tested it too arduously but it hasn't leaked yet.

I've tried some cheap drybags and waterproof duffels. As far as I can tell, the cheaper manufacturers have perfected the art of making them look identical to more expensive bags, and they often function identically, too....until the zipper fails or a seam rips far from home at the worst possible moment. When, two years ago, I had to pay an astronomical price for a replacement duffel (following a long search in a strange city) midway through a trip, I swore off the cheaper stuff.

It's one of the basic questions in gear purchases: do you pay far more than seems reasonable for the incremental increase in quality offered by major brands, or do you choose instead the off-branded imitators for less money than even seems possible....with the attendant risk of failure in use? I've discovered I'm far happier paying extra initially for the extra bit of quality. Everyone looks for their own balance point on the continuum. Often, choices depend on whether you're preparing for weekend-long trips here and there, where consequences are brief and tend not to be too serious, or for months on end touring the world at large.

This ignores the obvious fact that *sometimes* you pay top dollar for branded merchandise which is demonstrably inferior--in design, materials, or workmanship--to the off-brand imitators. So far, I haven't noticed this happening in waterproof bags and baggage, but I'm sure it's out there.

Just to say i paid £6.00 for a dry sack from justkampers.com, its water proof and dam near indestructible, highly recommended and it came with free over night deliver, they also do smaller size's. A great buy. Skip:clap:

Sailing shops
 

I was on my way to buy an ortlieb duffell bag today. I walked into a sailing shop by chance and found basically the same thing for a third the price. It looks to be pretty good quality and the catches etc. look strong enough. It also has loops for tying down.

I'm thinking that as it's from a sailing shop it should be pretty sturdy and waterproof right? I think I'll keep an eye out at shops like that from now on, all sorts of useful things that would cross over into biking equipment.

ive got an enormous 90ltr ortleib that i will take with me to the grave, you do get what you pay for.
saying that, ive had CRANE stuff before and they are pretty good quality, not as good as ortleib, but it would make a good emergency bag to keep rolled up, or two would make reasonable panniers if you could be sure they wouldnt get bashed around.

a word on cost, £7 is a good price but i got my ortleib for £15 so shop around online and join shops mailing lists, i quite often get sent vouchers its well worth the extra emails
