ROOF helmet
 

Used last 7 years BMW System 3. Helm worn out after my travelling and looking for a new helmet. Prefer flip-up helmet, use this quite a lot. Anybody experience with the ROOF Boxer helmet?

good; comfortable, light, pretty quiet, you can ride with the chinbar open, looks good

bad; not very good value for money, safety is only classed as an open face helmet, leaks a lot in heavy rain, doesnt have any vents(to be fair, doesnt need any).

its a good summer helmet but is expensive for what you get.

Dont buy a GREX flip front..crap!

I have a full-face Roof helmet and they are really good. But the 'flip-up' ones look like the chin bar is a token effort. I went for the Shoei Synchrotec 2 after briefly looking at the Roof. The Shoei has been excellent.

Decided not to go for the ROOF helmet, certainly after reading the topic about flip-up helmets. Still prefer these helmets but it is correct that the ROOF's chinpart is just fixed with 2 clips/buttons.
Also the price is quiet high, 300 euro, compared to the BMW helmet which cost around 375 euro.Then better wait/save a little longer and buy the BMW helmet, I was happy with my system 3 helmet for all these years.

I wear a BMW System 4 at work. It's crap. The helmet is cheaply made, uncomfortable and noisy. Some of the guys have the Shoei flip front and they love them.

When riding my own bikes I use an Arai Tour X which is very well made, superbly comfortable, reasonably quiet and has great ventilation. The helmet can also be used with the visor or goggles.

I also have a Shoei VFX R-2 for trail riding. This lid is also very well made and comfortable.

Anybody experience with the NOLAN flip-up helmet?Or the Schubert helmet but comes from the same factory as the BMW System helmet so?

I recently purchased a Nolan Classic Plus after learning the helmet was well received by many riders on the Motorcycle Tourers Forum. The helmet is the favorite of many long distance riders and sells for almost half the price of some competitors.

Prior to purchasing the helmet I wore it for a considerable time at the dealer and thought I had a good fit. Unfortunately, I didn't wear it with the chin bar down and locked. As it turns out, locking the chin bar forces the bottom portion of the helmet inward and after an hour or two makes the helmet uncomfortable (pressure on jaw). I'm hoping that with use, the pads will give a little and make the helmet useable. The key is to fit the helmet with the chin bar in the locked position. Otherwise, I've been very pleased with the helmet. The convenience of the flip-front is wonderful.

I have no idea about the roof helmet, but I can tell you that the Schuberth C2 is realy good and worth it`s money. Have a look in a store and ask for a test ride. That flip helmet is one of the best you can find. And it is the opposite of noisy as the most others are.

I chose the Nolan flip-up after extensive shopping. It's remained dry in driving rain and high winds and I do find it a bit noisy, though I always wear ear plugs.
I've never used the anti-fog inner shield but have good results with a anti-fog wipe. The liner pops out for washing. Removing the face shield for cleaning is a little complex but okay when you become familiar with the process.
It's vent system works okay and I've never had a helmet fit my big head better. On a recent cross-country ride, from snow to tropical heat, it worked well.

I travelled for four years with a ROOF around the world. Daves comments above are spot on.

I too think that they are okay, not brilliant.

NB: these helmets are a lot cheaper in France, where they are made.

I've had the ROOF for 5-6 years and ride 13-15k km pr year. It leaks when raining, it becomes alot bigger when used for a period, the ventilation is crap... but the worst is actually how it handles the wind. At 120km/h and above the winds seems to get under the chinpeace and pushes my cheak up just a little. To correct that movement one will tend to use neck-muscles to bow the head a bit forward.... almost without thinking about it. The result is stiff neck and shoulders, and any ride over 1 hour becomes almost painful. OK intercity-helmet, but not for the road. Thats my experience.

if you want an inexpensive flip front with safety standards as good as full face when locked down,then go for the CABERG justissimo

the caberg justissimo has to be the best value at the moment, but i have no experience with them in use as i couldnt get it to fit my big chin!! it wouldnt shut over my chin and my nose was pressed against the front. Schuberth helmets seem very well made but again they fit (me) very poorly, and whoever sizes them needs to lose their job. i usually take a size 58 which is medium to large depending on manufacturer, i tried shuberths up to XXXL and couldnt get them on without ripping my ears off.

i have bought an HJC flip up which fits my particular head very well and locks well too, but it is quite noisy and the visor does not seal out the rain very well. i also have a full face HJC and that visor is rubbish too, so its probably a feature of what is, to be fair, a budget maker. im happy with it anyway, i think it was good value.

my mate bought a BMW system helmet for £400(GBP) and never wears it because it cost so much.

i also think that with helmets you get what you pay for. the most i have paid for a helmet is £260 for an FM, and that lasted me over 4yrs of daily use and i only got rid of it because of the smell (this was before removeable washable liners) my other helmets have been cheap £50 to £100 things that, while they offer the same protection initially, simply dont last very long. the fit goes, the lining gets uncomfortable, the vents break, etc. when i got a new helmet i tried to smash the FM on the ground, being 2m tall and 115kg i thought there would be no problem. the visor broke but the helmet looked good as new. i, however, broke my wrist.

I just bought myself a Roof helmet, haven't had a chance to try it out yet. The thing that sold me was that i can get around town with the chin bar totally out of the way, but still be able to flip the visor up and down when i'm getting dust and crap in my eyes. Then when i ride out of town, it's simple enough to convert to full face. It seems a simple concept, hopefully some other manufacturers will give it a go so we can choose between styles.
Hopefully it will go ok at higher speeds with the chin bar down.
