ROOF helmet

Used last 7 years BMW System 3. Helm worn out after my travelling and looking for a new helmet. Prefer flip-up helmet, use this quite a lot. Anybody experience with the ROOF Boxer helmet?

DAVSATO 25 Mar 2004 03:04

good; comfortable, light, pretty quiet, you can ride with the chinbar open, looks good

bad; not very good value for money, safety is only classed as an open face helmet, leaks a lot in heavy rain, doesnt have any vents(to be fair, doesnt need any).

its a good summer helmet but is expensive for what you get.

Dont buy a GREX flip front..crap!

DougieB 25 Mar 2004 13:33

I have a full-face Roof helmet and they are really good. But the 'flip-up' ones look like the chin bar is a token effort. I went for the Shoei Synchrotec 2 after briefly looking at the Roof. The Shoei has been excellent.

pslootmans 3 Apr 2004 19:39

Decided not to go for the ROOF helmet, certainly after reading the topic about flip-up helmets. Still prefer these helmets but it is correct that the ROOF's chinpart is just fixed with 2 clips/buttons.
Also the price is quiet high, 300 euro, compared to the BMW helmet which cost around 375 euro. Then better wait/save a little longer and buy the BMW helmet, I was happy with my system 3 helmet for all these years.
Thanks for the reactions!

I wear a BMW System 4 at work. It's crap. The helmet is cheaply made, uncomfortable and noisy. Some of the guys have the Shoei flip front and they love them.

When riding my own bikes I use an Arai Tour X which is very well made, superbly comfortable, reasonably quiet and has great ventilation. The helmet can also be used with the visor or goggles.

I also have a Shoei VFX R-2 for trail riding. This lid is also very well made and comfortable.

Anybody experience with the NOLAN flip-up helmet?Or the Schubert helmet but comes from the same factory as the BMW System helmet so?

I recently purchased a Nolan Classic Plus after learning the helmet was well received by many riders on the Motorcycle Tourers Forum. The helmet is the favorite of many long distance riders and sells for almost half the price of some competitors.

Prior to purchasing the helmet I wore it for a considerable time at the dealer and thought I had a good fit. Unfortunately, I didn't wear it with the chin bar down and locked. As it turns out, locking the chin bar forces the bottom portion of the helmet inward and after an hour or two makes the helmet uncomfortable (pressure on jaw). I'm hoping that with use, the pads will give a little and make the helmet useable. The key is to fit the helmet with the chin bar in the locked position. Otherwise, I've been very pleased with the helmet. The convenience of the flip-front is wonderful.

I have no idea about the roof helmet, but I can tell you that the Schuberth C2 is realy good and worth it`s money. Have a look in a store and ask for a test ride. That flip helmet is one of the best you can find. And it is the opposite of noisy as the most others are.

Best regards

I chose the Nolan flip-up after extensive shopping. It's remained dry in driving rain and high winds and I do find it a bit noisy, though I always wear ear plugs.
I've never used the anti-fog inner shield but have good results with a anti-fog wipe. The liner pops out for washing. Removing the face shield for cleaning is a little complex but okay when you become familiar with the process.
It's vent system works okay and I've never had a helmet fit my big head better. On a recent cross-country ride, from snow to tropical heat, it worked well.

Simon Kennedy 25 Jan 2005 23:33

I travelled for four years with a ROOF around the world. Daves comments above are spot on.

I too think that they are okay, not brilliant.

NB: these helmets are a lot cheaper in France, where they are made.

Dizzie 17 Feb 2005 03:05

I've had the ROOF for 5-6 years and ride 13-15k km pr year. It leaks when raining, it becomes alot bigger when used for a period, the ventilation is crap... but the worst is actually how it handles the wind. At 120km/h and above the winds seems to get under the chinpeace and pushes my cheak up just a little. To correct that movement one will tend to use neck-muscles to bow the head a bit forward.... almost without thinking about it. The result is stiff neck and shoulders, and any ride over 1 hour becomes almost painful. OK intercity-helmet, but not for the road. Thats my experience.

vajrapaddy 24 Feb 2005 05:12

if you want an inexpensive flip front with safety standards as good as full face when locked down, then go for the CABERG justissimo

you won`t find better for twice the price and then some

safe journey and safe return

DAVSATO 19 Oct 2006 20:02

the caberg justissimo has to be the best value at the moment, but i have no experience with them in use as i couldnt get it to fit my big chin!! it wouldnt shut over my chin and my nose was pressed against the front. Schuberth helmets seem very well made but again they fit (me) very poorly, and whoever sizes them needs to lose their job. i usually take a size 58 which is medium to large depending on manufacturer, i tried shuberths up to XXXL and couldnt get them on without ripping my ears off.

i have bought an HJC flip up which fits my particular head very well and locks well too, but it is quite noisy and the visor does not seal out the rain very well. i also have a full face HJC and that visor is rubbish too, so its probably a feature of what is, to be fair, a budget maker. im happy with it anyway, i think it was good value.

my mate bought a BMW system helmet for £400(GBP) and never wears it because it cost so much.

i think hes an idiot.

i also think that with helmets you get what you pay for. the most i have paid for a helmet is £260 for an FM, and that lasted me over 4yrs of daily use and i only got rid of it because of the smell (this was before removeable washable liners) my other helmets have been cheap £50 to £100 things that, while they offer the same protection initially, simply dont last very long. the fit goes, the lining gets uncomfortable, the vents break, etc. when i got a new helmet i tried to smash the FM on the ground, being 2m tall and 115kg i thought there would be no problem. the visor broke but the helmet looked good as new. i, however, broke my wrist.

seanh 19 Oct 2006 20:31

I just bought myself a Roof helmet, haven't had a chance to try it out yet. The thing that sold me was that i can get around town with the chin bar totally out of the way, but still be able to flip the visor up and down when i'm getting dust and crap in my eyes. Then when i ride out of town, it's simple enough to convert to full face. It seems a simple concept, hopefully some other manufacturers will give it a go so we can choose between styles.
Hopefully it will go ok at higher speeds with the chin bar down.

Fulmer

I went with a Fulmer flip face, and I really like it. It's a little noisy, but I have a windscreen on my long distance bike. It fits good and is pretty cheap. I've had it for over a year now and I still like it. AND, it doesn't fog up as badly as any of my previous helmets. The chin vent actually works. No leaks either.

Do NOT buy a Zeus flip face. Total garbage.

Charles.

Roof Boxers, are RUBBISH!

I have used mine 8hrs a day in London for a year and despite the advantages of being a flip helmet I found the build quality to be shocking, everytime you raise/lower the visor you smudge the lens as there is no 'tab' to lift it by, it leaks in rain. There is very little padding inside, just a hard shell. They are way over-priced and the very budget looking poppers for the chin guard rattle in the wind at speeds anything over 30mph, even when they are done up.

This helmet is more for scooter riders in a big city riding occassionally and wanting to look like Mavric from Top Gun. For big bike open-road riding it is just not up to it. It seems to be massively popular in London but then again London is all about having the most expensive piece of kit, and looking 'cool'.
All Ten guys who I worrk with share the same opinion on this Lid........Stay away from it!

Hope this helps

The bad thing about these ROOF helmets is that most that I've seen have a little bit of the "R" scratched off - it seems people cant resist it. I wouldnt use one!

Toyark 30 Sep 2007 13:58

my 2 pence

Schuberth C2 ...leaks -:oops2:
Roof...well Caminando is right - scratch off the leg of the 'R' and u got it- useless helmet, cheap, leaks, bad chin starp etc etc don't be a fashion or designer label victim!! :nono:

Find a helmet that fits your head then get the best your wallet can bear- Head injuries for the sake of a few quid are just a non-brainer- so to speak!
BMW's System 5 works for me- perfect with the 'double-glazed' visor. Never leaks, great fit (for me) perfect ventilation and a flip-up that I like:thumbup1:

This could be a way for some people to make new friends , I hear that they are very popular with guardsmen and politicians .

Nolan

I have a Nolan flip up. It is comfortable, is vented and is easily worked with one hand (while riding). Maybe a bit noisy but I typically wear ear plugs on long rides.

Regarding "value for your buck". Don't cut cost here for the sake of saving a few bucks. Your helmet is one item that you do not want to cut cost on.

Shoei Multi-Tec - $450 usd

I've owned two flip ups and just got a new one. My first was a Nolan, about eight years ago, and recently an HJC Element (the really cheapo one). Other HJC flips are much better.

I tried to convince myself about the ROOF while travelling in the UK and France. They were too expensive and it was obvious from looking closely that the build quality was suspect. And trying one on next to my Arai RX-7 was a joke. I did like the colors and the look. Newer ones are WAY better than the early ones. Better interior, comfort et al.

The HJC Element is an ultra cheapo ($125 US) helmet that actually was quiet and comfortable and easy to use. But one little drop (from only two feet up) totally shattered the chin bar plastic holding tabs. Junk. The whole chin bar fastening mechanism is plastic and everything in there broke on a nothing drop.

My early Nolan was OK but very very noisy. Newest generation are much much better and get rave reviews.

We just blagged a new Shoei Multi-Tec. Will report in on it. This helmet came out this year, Shoei's first new flip up in maybe ten years? If feels really good,
very well made....with STEEL hardware in the chin bar. It still would not pass
SNELL but I feel its the best flip up I've seen....and its comfortable. Have not ridden with it yet. It's $450 usd.

Another vote for the Nolan from me , I find mine quiet and comfortable and most important ,the rain does not leak in .Styling is a bit urghhy though !
I have a Shoei full face which is very old now but I am impressed with how it has stood up to abuse and I will be very interested to see Patrick's review of the Multitec helmet .I tried on a Syncrotec last year and found it very comfortable and well made , I came damn close to buying it.
I wouldn't buy HJC for a road helmet after seeing how quickly their dirt bike helmets deteriorate.
