I had this problem on my 3aj. It was the valve stem seals. I replaced them and re-lapped the valves - end of problem.

Check oil level

Hi Antonis,

Is it possible that you have overfilled the engine with oil?
If you are not familiar with these dry sump engines it is easy to make this mistake.
If it is badly overfilled it might cause the problem you describe.

To get a true oil level reading you must ride the bike for at least 5 minutes, let it tick over for 30 seconds or more and check using the dip stick that is part of the oil filler cap as soon as you switch the engine off. You must hold the bike vertical and don't screw the cap on, just rest it on top to make the reading.

I hope that it is this, it would be simple to fix.

Oil Problem

Hey Mark,

I Have Checked The Oils And They Were As They Should Be.
I `ve Changed Them Just In Case But That Was Not The Problem.
Thank You Though.

Valve stem seals are likely the cause, i overhauled the top end and had the same issue . changed the seals has a precaution .Problem solved!

How many miles on your xt? What year is it? Does it smoke at start up and stop ? Does it smoke all the time? Is the smoke black or blue? If it was valve seals It would smoke at start up after setting for a while [ like over night] and then stop after few a few seconds. If it keeps smoking blue it is probably rings. If the smoke is black it is too rich. Did it start all of a sudden? Need a little more info. When I bought my first xt it smoked at start up, it had not been taken care of. This is valve seals. I read a post about using Bell Ray oil to stop it. I tried it and it stopped after one long ride. thumpthump
