XTZ600 3aj Quick help needed please
 

Hi all,

Well my dream of an overland tour has just come 2 steps closer. First, I passed my driving test today :D and second I've found a XTZ600 3aj for sale which I intend to pick up tomorrow (Sat 31.Aug).

This is where I’m asking for some help. Could someone please give me some pointers as to what I should be aware of while checking the bike over, e.g. typical places for cracks in frame etc. The bike is from ’92 (registered in DK at least).

I intend to make the bike ready for touring over the winter, any suggestions for baggage, racks, crash bars etc. are greatly welcome.

sorry I can't really help you with what you need to do to your bike, as I'm looking for similar information (just brought an '88 3AJ).
But thought I'd congratulate you on your license as I'm doing mine for the 3rd time on Thurs. Hopefully come Thurs night I'll be in the same position as you.

Hi AFrear.
The 3aj was the best xt6 ever built, but it still suffers badly from the 5th gear problem which usually starts to appear at about 15000 miles. In its early stages the problem is very dificult to detect. Eventually you start to hear a harsher droning noise only in 5th. With higher mileage the problem also affects 4th and 3rd. Using replacement 3aj gears is therefore only a temporary fix really as it just starts all over again . I can supply an improved kit for all elec start xt6s 1VJ,3AJ,3TB.
I have not seen this problem on 4PT 600Es yet.
