XT600E wheels

Does anyone know whether any other models of Yamaha, or any other bike for that matter, use the same wheels as the XT600E? It's the hubs I'm interested in as I'm trying to source some wheels to rebuild. Second hand XT600E wheels are like the proverbial rocking horse sh*t, and veeeery expensive if you can ever find any.

Pretty sure that the xtz660 is a direct swap. Theyre made from alloy.

Hey, thanks for that Mezo. I searched ebay yesterday for Yamaha wheels, hoping to find something. I trawled through about 50 pages or more but didn't find these. I'll get in touch with the seller for more info.

....

The 3AJ 18" rim is a 2.50 too (same as 1VJ, though they are drum hub and gold).

If you're thinking of new rims, note I've had to order a new 2.50 rim specially from Central Wheel as they only carry 2.15 (Enduro/MX) as standard...still waiting since November...

The wheels Im looking at are from a bike from around 1995, so it looks like the rear will be OK but the fornt may not be. If the only difference is the disc and the mounting holes. that should be faily easy to deal with.
Thanks for all the info.

Can you not drill out and tap the M6 holes in the earlier hub to take M8 bolts for the later disc?

Is the bigger disc much of an improvement over the smaller one? I suppose you'd have to swap the fork legs as well if you swapped the wheels and discs together.

Alastair.

Moto Zulu 30 Jan 2011 06:41

Yes the fork legs from 1990-95 are different to 1996-2002

but you can make up some bolts to fit the disc.

This is what I would plan to do.

Sadly I missed out on these. I wasn't prepared to pay more than GBP200, somebody else was. I bet the seller was happy though when he saw me push the price up from 142 to 205!
Any more around anywhere?

I've found a breaker in Essex, so near to me, who has a rear wheel and a selection of fronts. It seems that any disc brake rear will fit all models and he has a 1995 front, so that should do the job. They're about the same as the ones I missed out on and are CHEAPER.

I managed to get a front and a rear for £150, originally £165, and saved postage too, so a good deal as far as I'm concerned. They have various bits off Xts so worth a call if you're searching.
I'm now considering an 18" rear and 19" front, ally rims. I'm not rushing into this, plenty of time to sit and think about it.

Does anyone know exactly what has to be done to fit a set of 1990 xt600e wheels, on a 2003 xt600e?

I know the frontdisc on the older bike is smaller, can you just fit a bigger disc (same hole pattern?) is the shafts , spaccer, bearings ect the same?

Thx a lot.

xtorange 26 Feb 2011 09:13

hello, yeh no problems at all with fitting the earlier front wheel. All the same bits. As mentioned in an earlier post, the disc bolt holes are smaller. I have held back from drilling out my early hub to M8 because the hub casting is different between early/late and doesn't look 'beefy' enough (compared to later hubs). So had to make collars to slot over the M6 bolts.

Jens Eskildsen 26 Feb 2011 18:50

And thats it? Perhaps one could make som small bushings for the bigger disc, to use with the smaller screws?

The rear is just bolt on?

Thx in advance.

xtorange 2 Mar 2011 22:05

That's the idea Jens.
I spent a rather frustrating afternoon with a hacksaw trying to cut 4mm lengths of metal hydraulic pipe of 8mmOD by 6mmID. Eventually ended up with 6 of these 'collars'.
All this to have a gold alloy front wheel!

Im looking for a wheel for mye 3yf xtz 660 tenere. And on mine its 2.75 x 17. And has 120/90 - 17 tyre. Would it be ok to use a 3.00 x 17 rim? and use 120/90 - 17 tyre?

Best regards
