XT600e running badly

Hi everybody,
I'm in desperate need for some expert advice / opinions and hope somebody can help.
The motor on my XT600e (2001 model) runs well. Starts on the 1st push of the button, idles well, does not smoke - everything fine.
About 2,000km ago, I noticed a constant 'rocking back and forth' sensation.
The motor does not miss-fire or strains when this sensation occurs. This 'rocking' sensation is really very pronounced at low speeds (20-30km/h) in 1st & 2nd gear. When in 5th gear I do not have the 'rocking' sensation. Only 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th. When I pull the clutch when I feel the 'rocking' sensation, it stops immediately.
I thought it might be a carb setting so followed the advise posted on the HUBB here and adjusted the air / fuel mix to a point where the plug colour is chocolate milk - not change in the 'rocking'.
I adjusted the chain as per the manufacturer's specs, adjusted valve clearances 100% correct, changed the plug, changed the coil & ignitor unit, made sure the air filter's 100% clean, checked wheel bearings, cleaned all fuel filters, cleaned carb - no change in the 'rocking'.
Can anybody shed some light on where the problem may be?
Thank you very much for the feedback
Bruce

This sounds like a worn out chain/sprocket problem. Is there any noise from the chain like it is binding. Does it bind when you push it by hand?

Try spinning the wheels and see that they are spinning freely. Bearing can lock up an spin in the hub causing major wear.

Just a thought.

Hi guys & thanks for the replies,
Sorry for the late response. My computer decided to crash just after I posted.
Rubber dampers in hub's still good. I checked the bearings and they're still good also.
Replaced the chain with a new one and the 'rocking' sensation's 99% gone. Hopefully a tuning of the carb and final adjustment of the chain slack will take care of the remaining 1%.
Thanks again
Bruce
