XT600E, oil change, ratchet noise for 30 sec.

Hi all

I just changed the oil in my “new to me” 2000 XT600E, 4PT.

On startup a “ratchety” type of noise came from the right hand side of the engine. Not loud but very noticeable. After about 30 seconds the noise went away, and the engine sounded normal.

Does anyone know why this happened?

I have not had this exact XT model before, but the XT’s I have had in the past (old XT600, XT550, XT250 and a TT600RE) did not dot make this noise.

Did this just happen once ???

If yes, probably just the oil pump filling up.

I always prime my oil filters with clean oil before I install them. On the XT, run the bike and loosen off the little bolt about the oil filter housing. When oil starts oozing out, nip it up again. It's an air bleed with the oil pump.

Thanks guys, yes I started the bike and loosened the small screw on the filter housing. The oil pressure was good.

Yes this is the only time I have heard this, but this is the first time I change the oil on this bike.

My first thought was the oil pump. I drained the oil 24 hours before I put the new oil in. So the engine was dry when I started the bike, all the oil was in the frame. But I have never before heard a noise like this from a oil pump. And the noise lasted for maybe 30 sec. Can it take that long to fill up the oil pump?

Someone was wondering if the time chain could make this noise at startup. Do you guys think that could be the case?

Nevermind...

Did you manage to find out the cause of the noise

I've heard that noise too from time to time, sounds a bit like the pistonrings is spinning or something. I think its just a slightly low oil pressure/volume after a long standstill.

Yes i heard it on the 4pt engine and this bike had low mileage and it was there every start up. Think i have heard it some times on my 3tb, honestly i have stopped listening for sounds on these bikes because its there and it seems like they run year after year anyway.

My almost brand new 600E used to be noisy from cold. Different grade oil is said to stop it. What grade I can't remember.
