XT600E front brake caliper

Does anyone have a spare front caliper for a 1994 3TB hanging around? (Twin piston type.) Looks like I need another one, and they are like hen's teeth on eBay.

Thanks

Hi Blackdog
Does the later model 1997 4pt use the same caliper as that you are looking for? Its twin pot and has nissin written on it.

That sounds like it. When I get some clothes on I'll go and take a photo.

Cheers

Here it is. You can see what a carry-on I have had with the lower pad retaining pin!

Might you have one spare?

That Nissin looks like its mounted on an adaptor plate - whereas the lugs on the forks would fit another type of caliper. This should give you a wider range of choice?
What are the lug centres (100mm?)
(PS: Gald you got dressed before the "photo shoot")

It's bloody cold here this morning, and I was only wearing a dressing gown! I didn't want to get frostbite :)

Centres between the lugs are just over 100mm - 102 or 103. And I don't think it is an adapter plate. It's the carrier plate that the sliding pins mount onto.

I really have a choice between drilling the pin out and replacing it with a through-bolt, and replacing the whole caliper. A new caliper seems the easiest route, especially as the pistons are starting to corrode. A s/h one in decent nick would do me fine. Those pins are made of the hardest metal known to man. Stud extractors can't get a grip in it, and the drill is just bouncing off. The annoying bit is that I had them out for a pad change a few months ago and gave them a proper greasing with copperslip when I put them back. But the hex at the top is just that little bit too slack, and when I got the Allen key in it - oops.

Hi Blackdog
That looks like it!
The caliper is in perfect working order as I was using the bike until recently
(Decided to break it due to Kn*****d engine)
I will have to check the condition of thr retaining pins
Send me a PM with an offer
Cheers Steve

You're up to 4 already! Post something about the weather or the football scores and you're there!

I'll PM you again.

Many thanks.

Sorted! Thanks to Steveyama I have a new caliper (off a 4TP, but same part) and I've overhauled it with a kit from David Lambeth. New EBC pads and took it for a spin today, and it's back to normal. Lever action is smooth, brakes are predictable and strong, and I can squeal the front tyre on a dry road.

Now, do I overhaul the old caliper or just bin it?

Thanks to Steve for meeting me on a cold afternoon and letting me have the caliper at a very reasonable price.

Good to hear all's well with the brakes, at least the calipers being put to use and not just sat in someones garage.
Good to meet you
Cheers Steve

Thanks Steve. I should have questioned you more about the bits you were getting rid of - there were a few things there I could have made you an offer on :) Trouble is they were all 'nice to haves' (like the alloy rims) and not 'must haves' like the brake bits, and money's a bit tight at present. Shame.
