Buttered getting the exhaust off.

Are you sure it isn't the Head that's damaged as that what the exhaust bots into.

They are known problem with the XT600E. I've just had to do my TT600 (same motor).

If it is the head then they can be repaired by an engine restorer. And cheaper than you think,

Yeah sorry it's the head that is butchered but would buy a complete top end if anyone has one, did mean to write barrel piston and head ...

Cheers

Like Ted says,

Send your head to Lambeth or Moorespeed & they can drill out the broken studs & fit thicker ones.

Mezo.

hi any pics of the damage? steve

You shouldn't need to send it to anyone. Every town has an engine reconditioner.

I do all my own heads usually but the XT is a pain because the studs are on an angle so I can't put it straight on my Pillar Drill.

My local company charges £7 per stud so I'd let them do it rather than wasting all day on it.

I don't like using hand drill on studs. Especially on those stupid 6mm Yamaha ones. I wouldn't like to tap out to M8 either. There doesn't seem to be a lot of casting to accommodate a bigger stud.

I will get some this week when I am back at the garage ... I think half the old headers are still stuck in and the guy has chiseled away at the head trying to get them out but now it just looks a mess

Cheers

My headers were rusted in too.

I used a blow torch (MAP gas) to heat the area up as much as a possible to expand the aluminium then went to work with a wooden drift and a BIG mallet. It took 20 mins but they eventually budged.

You can weld repair any broken areas.

Heads are very rare on the second hand market. The enthusiasts and restorers have them all. They're like hens teeth on ebay.

David Lambeth is hiding all of them in his shed haha. He might sell you one.

Savable.. You need a TCT burr grinder bit on an air powered die grinder. Clean out out like a dentist cleans out a cavity. The studs need drilling out and retapped or helicoiled.

As long as the head can hold the exhausts in place while you tighten the stud nuts, you're all good. It will be sealed.

hi as ted says looks to be just the remains of the headers which can with time and patience be ground out, nows the time if you havent got a dremel type tool to treat yourself ,the remains of the studs can be drilled or spark eroded out ,is that a vertical crack on the left port top right? ,maybe weld at the finish of the clean up,i would try all i could with this head before i went looking for another ,i think you will be pleased when you have tried ,steve
