xt600 won't run

Hi can anybody help here?

My '92 xt600e dies on me when I pull away. It starts, idles and revs fine in neutral, although it pops a bit and has backfired at sustained high revs.

But when I put it in gear and pull off it just dies. Sometime almost immediately sometimes I can can up to 100m before it dies.

The airfilter was pretty clogged and there was a small pool of oil in the airbox. I have run it breifly without the airfilter but still the same problem.

Fuel tap from the tank works fine.

It had been running not badly although it was due to go in for a complete service but I can't get it there now.

Any ideas welcome.

Cheers

Robin

Hi

The inside of the exhaust can be clogged or broken. Try to run the bike without exhaust (only for a short while: both neighbours and the engine dont like running without exhaust:-).
I had the same problem with a XT500. Took me over a week before I discovered the inside of the exhaust was partly clogged by a broken off piece.

THANX PETER.

I will look at that as well. Do you know a good replacement exhaust that gives good performance and sound!

Cheers

Hi,
You could also check the fuel-filter. If you don't have one, maybe clean the carb(s).

Thanks for all your help. It did turn out to be some very dodgey wiring repairs done sometime in its histroy around the side stand cut out circuit. Now fixed.

Thanks again

The Arrow pipe is very nice and higher quality than most other options. Unfortunately I think they are expensive (160-200 GBP).

Micron and Remus also do them.
