xt600 not charging

hello
I have a 1986 xt600 the headlight is very dim, when I hit the brakes the headlight gets brighter, I bought a brand new battery for it and charged it full.
It lost it charge in less then 1hr of riding.
I checked the voltage at the battery with the bike running reved it up to 5k rpms with my meter it shows like 9.0 to 10.0 volts.
I tryed switching the voltage regulator off my 1984 xt600 and it did the same thing.
What would be the next steps to check?
thanks

Google electrosport charging troubleshooting, a very useful pdf. Basically you can check resistance between coils on alternator, I think should be less than 0.5ohm between all three and close to infinity to earth. You can also check running voltage of the output wires (ac) between each of the three wires, should be equal and no voltage when checked against earth.

Also check wiring by setting the multimeter to volts and connecting between the reg output and the battery terminal, positive to positive negative to negative. Corrosion was my problem and caused the reg to throttle early as the voltage at the reg was higher than what was reaching the battery.

Most likely cause is the Regulator Rectifier being toasted

XT600 not charging

I am having the same problem with my 86 XT600.

I am picking up a new battery tonight. Will be interesting to see how long it stays charged.

I remember measuring the resistance of the stator and that being ok. And also trying to get a current reading off the wire going back to the battery, but it not registering on my meter. I assumed it was because the battery was dead and wouldn't take the charge.

Please post your eventual cure.

Thanks,
Greg

hello
I still have not figured this out yet.

also I am not very good with google I could not find the pdf for electrosport charging troubleshooting yet? it brought me to a site but I could not find that pdf?
any help or ideas would be great
thanks

There is a brillant factory manual from Kenfallen there on Hubb.
Regulator on my 1Vj is at the back of the battery box up against the Mud guard.

charging coils

hi.

try to check charging coils inside engine in left side (these coils charging cdi). pickup coil, cdi, alternator should be ok.
measure voltage and if it's lower than 45V = rewind/replace charging coils (2pieces). u can do easily rewind at ur home. if voltage will be on the 43-44V that's mean that ur coils will be failed in short time.
but if coils will be failed engine doesn't start.
