XT600 Mirrors
Is the standard mirror on an 86 xt600 a left hand thread 12mm fitting, just checking as supplier says he has never heard of a 12 mm thread on any yamaha and I am sure the fittings on my bike are standard.
thanks in advance for any response, got a feeling i need to find new supplier. |
Pretty sure it's 10mm, with a left hand thread on the LH mirror only. I think Yamaha are the only maker to do this.

Not sure about a 1986 model, but my 2001 4PT model has 10mm threads. The L/H side has a normal thread and the R/H side is a left hand thread.

Oops, did I get that the wrong way round?

Its lefthand because when you crash, the mirror will/can fold backwards untightening itself, instead of breaking.
I guess its the same concept as the wind-thing, just a bit more extreme. |
Now you can't have it both ways :)
If the LEFT mirror is a conventional thread, it will loosen when pushed backwards - good in a fall, bad if pushed by the wind. If the RIGHT mirror is a conventional thread, it will tighten when pushed backwards - bad in a fall, good if pushed by the wind. Does that make sense? I'm still convinced that it is the left mirror that has the LH thread :) but the bike is under a tarpaulin and I am working nights this week, so I won't be able to check for a few days. No doubt I will be wrong. |
Clutch side normal thread (lefty loosy, righty tighty)
The brake side has links/reverse-thread. |
Thanks for all the response guys, been on a mission checking all parts on bike and all seem to be original yam bits, anyway have found a set that suit and look good that are made for an MZ. And yes left hand is RH thread and right hand is LH thread.bier

I bought some "EMGO" brand mirrors made in Taiwan, so they were cheap.
I wouldn't recommend them as the mirror lens was not tight enough in the casing, so vibrated a lot being a big single. After urethaning the mirror lenses in they aren't too bad. Bob |

Right side is left hand thread..... I re-tapped the thread on one of my Tenere's & fitted some Triumph Bonneville mirrors I picked up at an autojumble... they work a treat & fantastic quality
