XT600 electrical problem
 

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my 94 XT600K ETB and hope that someone can help me...

When I turn my headlights on, the rear light, numberplate light, and the dash light do not work. The rear light does come on, however, when the brakes are applied. So it's not a bulb issue. According to the wiring diagram the dash and rear light do connect at some point. Further down, I assume that there is a problem.

Does anyone know where I should be looking? I am terrible with electrical issues and do not even know where to begin.

Any help would be much appreciated.

There are two circuits going to your rear light - one from the brake and one from the lights. If the brake light is working okay I'm guessing there is some break/short in your lighting circuit. Does your headlight work?

There is a switch that turns the lights on/off .. that switch should turn on these lights that are not working - that is where I would be looking. Some of these kind of switches have the ability to turn on the rear tail lights and instrument lights alone in one setting, then turn on the headlight as well in a different setting.

I take it that these lights all failed at once, that the voltage regulator is functioning (check your battery voltage does not rise too much as engine revs rise) - in other words that the globes work and the failure is in the switching/fuses/wiring. Arr ...your headlight is powered from the battery .. and not the stator? If from the stator .. you could have blown a headlight globe .. and replaced it ? And while it was blown the resultant high voltage has taken out the tail lights and instrument lights.

Thanks for the help. It does make sense that the switch on the bars might be the first possible source of the fault. I have tomorrow off work so will try and take a look. Will keep you updated...

You can test the switch very quickly if you have a multimeter. Just disconnect the nine pin multi-plug that you'll find in that big nest of wires behind the headlight and check for continuity between the brown wire and the blue (with the switch turned to on obviously). If that checks out ok I would guess the problem is further along the blue wire. At some point it splits, with one wire carrying power on to the dash lights and one going to the rear light (which also illuminates the number plate) via the ignition switch.

I've used a really helpful circuit diagram that I found on the net to track down my electrical problems. It matches the wiring on my '97 XT so will hopefully apply to yours as well. I'll paste a link to it below but if you can't download it from there let me know and I'll see if there's a way to send it to you.

Hey guys, I will use this topic, as I also have a wiring issue.

I have made a complete new wiring loom on my xt600z 1vj (CDI type)

first: how to bypass neutral and sidestand switch directly from the cdi? as i dont have either of the switches I just connected the wires directly to the starter cut off relay and neutral relay. I get a clicking sound from the starter solenoid but engine wont crank, if I bypass the solenoid, starter turns well (baterry is new and 100% ok) I will try another solenoid this afternoon just to be sure.

second: I dont get a spark. As I am still waiting for a spark plug cap to come (I lost my old one, dont ask how :) ) so i just connected the wire from the coil directly to spark plug, wich is also new, and all I got was a barely noticable week spark once, with a kickstarter?

I also dont have the original stop switch (wich was somehow bypassed before I started working on new loom) and my start switch is also missing, so I am now, as before, using the horn button to start.

All the lights and neutral indicator and switch work fine.

Any ideas?

I will get nore answers tonight, when a friend comes, so I will try his solenoid (actually my old one) and a spark plug cap.

Your wireing issue is not the same - start two new threads!

Make the subject, for example,

xt600z 1vj (CDI type) bypass neutral and sidestand switches at CDI.

xt600z 1vj (CDI type) no spark after new wiring loom

I will wait until tomorrow, to see what I can do tonight.

UPDATE: It turned out that three bulbs had blown - The front headlight, the rear light and the dash light. Replaced all three and they all worked again. Must have been a surge in the wiring that connects them all that blew them.
