XT600 Case savers/armor and skid plates
Hi,
does anyone know where or even if there are out there, case savers for the XT600, in my case a 2003 DJ02. I have been looking for ages and found for TT's, for DR's and such, but nothing for the XT. Specifically looking for: Case saver (something like this) http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps8666ef0c.jpg And then the crank case and clutch cover case guards - the "glue on" type or similar....(something like this): http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t...ps76d5841b.jpg And the big question is: - Is my quest really worth the bother? I do moderate off-road and plan to do an African round trip sometime soon. Are these bits of gear just gizmo or can they really avoid you getting stuck in the middle of nowhere in case a clutch, break lever or even a chain decides to pierce through your engine case? Would like to hear wise opinions and suggestions, and even experience. For example: - how problable is it to happen - is the extra weight worth it (as insignificant a it may be) - do the case guards have any influence on engine heat and dissipation - any hands on experience with holes in the covers Cheers, RN |
The chain case saver is a nice insurance, a good quality chain that gets changed before it is past due will mostly eliminate any broken chain , however things can happen that could break it. Low chance but can then do a lot of damage. Try a saver for the 660 , it may fit .
The other cover can be negated with a skid plate that has "ears" or weld some ears to protect the front and sides of those side covers. |
IMHO a quality bash plate is vital if you ride any off road. That I know after 35 years of experience. You can get a quality bashplate from CRD.
I don't think anyone makes a case saver or those side covers for the XT600E. Personally I would not bother with those, but I don't let my chains get horribly worn. |
Ya, in all my miles on bikes and sport quads , never had a chain break either , always had someone willing to grab my old takeoff chains for their bikes/quads and eventually hear of broken cases from them after it was way beyond shot :no:

Hi, theres not much room for a case saver, and as I recall, no real place to mount it either. Perhaps you can glue a small strip of metal to the case where the chain rides.
As for armor for the sidecovers, I haven't seen anythin either, but it should be fairly easy to make some and glue them on yourself. Keep us updated. |

Anyone has or knows of any bad experiences with these skid plates? I know they are soft(er) but for my moderate off-roading and african trip I am hoping it won't slid open on the first small rock/branch! Opinions are very welcomed! Quote:

The xtz bashplate will handle rocks and treelugs just fine, and protect the lower of the engine.
