xt600 2kf

Hello, I haven't viewed the site for a while, then I had my long term Ariel rebuild in hand, (still!) and a GPZ500s,which has proved invaluable. One thing about that bike was the concern for radiator damage,so I bought an XT600 2KF model in France. Something of a mystery, carte d'gris says 1989, previous owner says 1987? Anyway, bought as a non runner, carbs off, manifolds split , general wear and tear. Carb/manifold rekit gave me a runner, but only on choke, stripping again resulted only in reluctant jet holder snapping off in the body even after warming and a special releasing agent. In disgust I put the Yam/Teiki carbs away and ordered a OKO/ Keihin copy 34mm flatslide carb and am setting about making a manifold to make life simpler. Somewhere I saw a series of useful mods, like a centrestand and oil temp gauge who makes these? Thanks

Hi Svliker,
I got my oil temp gauge from KEDO.de . Unfortunately, the only place to install them is on the oil tank.
As for centerstands, I know OTR sells one for the TT600 (you would need to ask first if it would fit an older XT600 though). The only centerstands I have seen sold specifically for the XT600 are for post 1990 models and are attached to one of the swing axles. A heavier duty centerstand was made by an Italian company but discontinued in the 90s I think. They mount with the footpegs and if you look hard enough you might find one on Ebay or equivalent site.

Thank you, the oil temp, maybe I could laser the tank to get an initial reading. I'm considering an oil cooler to cool things and increase the volume. If I could get a drawing of the stand I can make it, otherwise a bit of time. A further query ; I'm six foot but unladen the XT seems a little leggy, is it common practice to lower? Front is simple, but rear? Thanks:mchappy:

For the oil temp sensor I use Trailtech 6mm x 1mm probes and drill and tap a hole in the right side of the head , there is a plug below the exhaust valve where they drill a hole and then capped it. By putting the probe there you read the oil temp in real time right inside the head by the exhaust valves where it's the hottest and best spot . I've posted a few pics on ADV Rider forum in both the XT600 and XT550 threads . Otherwise I can post it here as well(probably did a few years ago).

Probe used is the top one , https://www.btosports.com/p/TRAIL-TE...kaAu-qEALw_wcB
