Xt250
 

I eventually welcomed a wee XT250 into my life and am currently setting her up for touring. :scooter:

We are heading to Norway in July and so will be riding from Scotland to Scandinavia and back. Got a couple of things which I'm wondering if anyone can advise on!

1 - Currently got knobblies on but wondering what to put on for our trip. We will mostly be riding on tarmac but will hopefully come across gravel roads in Norway. I'm thinking about Avon tyres as I can get these at cost but not sure which ones would be best or if really I should be looking at another make.

2 - I'm old school and use maps and therefore need a map pocket. The one that I have just isn't working. Does anyone know of any which work with the tank shape?

Hi, I used Heidenau K60 Scout on my Yamaha WR250R for that kind of riding in Norway - mostly tarmac, but a wee trip into the forest to do some gravel roads now and again. Very capable tires even on wet tarmac, and capable on gravel. Not so capable in mud or on grassy, wet roads, but you can usually avoid that kind of stuff. They are pretty long lived and are nicely priced.

Hi, I do not know the Avons, but to me they seem mostly tarmac oriented. I would choose the Heidenaus.

I use the TKC80 here in Norway, really good tires onroad and does the job outside the road. I really dont think you have to worry about riding to mush outside the tarmac, first its not alowed to ride where you want in the forest. And depending on where your going i dont think you find many roads for that kind of riding. Have a nice trip, if youre riding up north its amazing with sun all day and night now. Use forum if you need help when your on the trip here, i guide you!

On a trip to the Yukon and Alaska I used the Dunlop D603 not too aggressive knobbies on my Kawasaki KLX250s which came with the new bike. Mostly pavement and a few gravel/dirt roads including some rain and mud. The tires were quite pavement friendly and did fine on the unpaved sections.

Been doing some more research into possible tyres and it turns out that there are only 2 types for which I can get a front and a matching rear in my Xt250's sizes... The choices are either...

Heidenau K60

or

Mefo Sport MFE99

Otherwise it would mean using different tyres on the front & rear which I believe is not the best!?! Can anyone advise?

Sure you can mix tires...I've allways done it.

It seems like its mostly tarmac, so I wouldnt worry too much, just about any tire should do.

Jep, I have used avon gripster tires. Very good on the blacktop, last a long time but very little traction off road. A road tire basically.
