XT searching for a neutral

I'm occasionally a bit annoyed at my XT 600 (2NF) when it downshifts back to neutral only with some searching. Usually like this: I slow down and downshift but when at stop the neutral isn't there and then I have to try to move the bike a bit and play again with the gear lever). Is this usual/alarming? Fixable by an amateur? Shifts between other gears are fine.

Does your clutch cable need adjusting?
My bike did exactly what you are describing. When I took it in for a service, the Yamaha dealer tightened up the cable a little bit and it is now noticably easier to find neutral.
Hopefully this is all you need to do. Dan.

I hope its the clutch needing adjustment otherwise it could be worn selector arm or dogs... That gets expensive :(

Upon noticing the very similar problem I can adjust the cable even when riding. It is worth checking both ends of the cable.
