XT in hibernation
Hi,
I have just returned from six months working overseas and I am in the process of getting my XT600E back on the road. Apart from the obvious (tyre pressures, chain tension, oil level etc) is there anything I should check/look out for? My bike has been outside with a cover over it through a very hard UK winter and any ideas would be welcomed as I need to use the bike a lot in the near future. Thanks, Mick. |
Cant think of much. The obvious is to prepare it, for sitting a long time.
Just have a look at it and take it slow. |
I'd drain the petrol tank ( I presume you left it full to prevent rust) as the fuel ethanol mix has almost certainly absorbed moisture. Your carbs may have evaporated fuel residue in them. Your oil should probably be changed as once its gone through the engine and exposed to fuel and other contaminants will continue to degrade ( fully synth exception) and you may want to idle a bit with the clutch in for a bit to ensure lubrication in case it has dried up some. Chances are though, you can just get on and ride. Be sure your battery is ok and fully charged before attempting to start her. Low voltage draws on startup can cause a whole host of problems.
