xt 600e rear sprocket size
 

i have heard of people fitting larger rear sprockets to xt600 to improve performace in fifth gear. I have a 1999 600e, how many extra teeth would be sufficient to improve the gearing, and do renthal make an upgrade sprocket to fit?

Hi.
If you put a bigger sprocket on the back you will increase your "take-off'" speed and reduce your top speed in 5th. To increase your top speed you need to put a smaller sprocket on the back. I wouldn't change more than 2 teeth at a time. A company in OZ called Chain gang makes a exelent sprocket.

Hi there, i'd rather go for a smaller front sprocket (14 instead 15). The transmision will thank you, especially the 5th gear) even for the 3tb model.

On the tarmac at 60 miles por hour, you can use the 5th gear with no problems whatsoever with the 14-44 gear sprocket relation. With the stock gear sprocket 15-45, the engine vibes a lot. Stay safe with 14-44 instead 15-43 or 42

I was thinking of lowering the gearing to increase top speed and also reduce revs while cruising for fuel consumption.

Hi -giving feedback on my sprocket experience: I have run a 14 tooth on the front for 4 years and racked up about 20k km, with the standard 17inch rear wheel and a 45 sprocket it nicely drops the gearing and makes the 5th gear a much better option at 70mph. Better for pulling wheelies also ;).
Most of the time my XT runs an 18inch rear with a 47 tooth sprocket and this makes the gearing much more suitable for serious off road use... even better wheelies!

The best sprockets I've use regards longeivity and price are the JT steel pattern ones - they have lasted me the same as the original Yam ones and wear quite consistently. I did buy a front Renthal one when I first had dropped the gearing years ago - it was hopeless and all the teeth ground down, with it ending up a very artistic crescent shape.

Standard gearing is 15/45

I put a 41T on the back last weekend and im not impressed. I can cruise easily at 85-90mph instead of high reving 5th at 70mph but the acceleration is now quite poor and im changing gear quite often to find some torque.

I cant see how dropping to a 14t front will make 5th gear better. It "should" make it much worse and equvilent of fittings a 15/48 combo.

Im going to fit a 15/43 combination and see what the trade off is like.
