XT 550 wiring… grounding points.

XT 550 wiring… Where are the ground connections?

I wanted to check the grounds on my ’83 XT550… didn’t find any. The wiring was grounded through the black wire running to the ignition coil…. That can’t be right…

I however found a black wire that wasn’t connected?? See pic.

Does anyone know something about this ??

Bikes usually have a ground wire coming off the main battery neg terminal which then attaches to the engine casing somewhere convenient. As long as you have a good neg link from the battery to engine & frame, bung it where you want.

That wire might be from a disabled/removed sidestand switch.

Thanks guys. BlackDogZulu, the side stand switch has been removed. That's probably it.

The normal thing is to bypass the (missing) switch by joining the two wires. As this one is unconnected, I would guess that the other black wire (if the colouring is the same as mine) is earthed somewhere else. I had to earth mine under the seat next to the ignition box, as there was a break in the wire that I could not trace.

Definitely the right place for connectors to a disabled sidestand switch....looks quite familiar.:thumbup1:
