What model do I have?

I'm trying to work out the exact model Yamaha I have? I've seen internet photos of other Yamaha bikes that look the same as mine but have small differences.
I'm told I have a 2003 XT600e. On my rego papers it has Model:yama84D

My clutch cable travels down the left had side of the cylinder where other same looking bikes it travels down the other RHS of the cylinder.
Is the model secret in the VIN number?
I've looked at the manual section in this forum and I cant even find a 2003, there are heaps of XT600e but no 2003?

Any help at all would be great. Cheers, Kevin.

One more quick question, as soon as the ignition is turned on the headlight comes on. Is that meant to be as a safety feature or am I not seeing the on off switch somewhere? Some of you guys must be peeing your pants at my ignorance on all this lol.

Hi !

I have a 2003 xt and my clutch cable travels around the rhs of the cylinder. im sure on earlier models the cable route is different.

My model (british) is a 4ptb and this is found on a sticker on the frame when you remove the seat.

Hope this helps and welcome to the forum!

If you provide us with picture its easier to find out, yes some countries have automatic light on and no switch. And yes its stupid, i bought the switch from another bike so i can switch off lights when i start the bike if its low on power like in wintertimes. The button is beside high low switch, if you wanna make this cheap and easy set up a switch On/off for this.

jjrider 6 Aug 2014 22:27

Stupid , you mean like the US. A switch to turn off the lights is illegal, them dipshits ! I still need to pick me up a couple european switches so I can shut the lights off also.

As to the OP, it sounds like a 4pt(or equivolent ) , cable routing doesn't necessarily mean much, I've seen the same models that have them routed differently just depending on the country, like the speedo cable, in the US it is run up the back of the fork but in Aussi it runs up in front.

You most likely have a model 3WR see here 11th line from the bottom
The Ténéré Forum • View topic - XT 600 model codes
which has the clutch cable on the left side of the engine.
The european DJ02 or 4PT which can be identified by the clutch cable on the right hand side of the engine was not introduced to Australasia.
And yeah there's no headlight switch.
Maybe a European or 4PT model switch might fit?
oops Mezo has beaten me here lol doh

I thank you all for your reply and for Mezo for taking the time to snap a photo.

awolxt....Ive yet to take the seat off and look for the model number but I will ASAP.

Bobmech.... I think you might be close with your way of working out what model it is. In the VIN number there is a 3WR

I'll try (fingers crossed) to post a couple of photos of my bike and the VIN plate numbers. Its showing the 8/03 as the year I think. Sorry its a bit hard to see the stamping.

Thanks also for the heads up on the head lights. Ive ordered a 55w HID 6000K off EBAY. As I fit it I'll take a few pics and leave a thread on here how it all went and what I think of the light. The stock light on the XT isn't that bad so Im keen to see if this new HID is better.

Thanks again everyone for your time and for making me feel welcome in this site. Cheers, Kevin.

55w HID will destroy the reflector!! I recomend to buy the new LED for H4.

Jens Eskildsen 7 Aug 2014 20:15

Im against HID in reflectors not made for it. Tried it and didnt like it, nor did oncoming traffic.

As you said it, stock lights arent so bad, use relays and a good H4 bulb, and light will increase significantly.

Bobmech 8 Aug 2014 01:15

Kevin, sorry I meant to say 3WR (not 3UW) which is your model code as shown in your frame number.:thumbup1:

No worrys (Bobmech) Bob, I knew it was a typo from you. Thanks heaps for that list.

awolxt, Bill was on the money also with knowing the numbers were under the seat. Thanks Bill.

xtrock has me worried with the destroying the reflector if I fit a 55w HID set up. I never gave heat a thought, I think Ive blown 20 bucks, I've already paid and ordered it on ebay.
Reading between the lines maybe the LED lights don't put out heat or very little heat?

At the worst I'll just do what Jens Eskildsen has said and hard wire to a relay and run the best quality h4 bulb I can find.
Ive worked out how to post pics in here so if I do find a great light set up I'll post my findings. Until then I'll stumble my way through it all learning by my mistakes.

BTW, I think its safe to say I have a Yamaha 2003 XT600e 3WR

This is a great forum. You guys are a great bunch.

No problems with the LED, but they are expensive. Best H4 is the Philips Xtreme.
