Wet Misfires?

Hi,

Has anyone come up with a solution for heavy raĆ½n and spray causing a misfire and eventual cut out? I've read all the past postings and I'm definately getting damp in the plug cap despite the rubbers seeming quite tight. Today I've tried greasing them but I've got a feeling this will just melt.

It's not a major hassle, but it always seems to happen at the most embarrassing moments and it is starting to rain in these Turkish mountains.

Cheers

George

What bike do you have?
Is the connection at the coil watertight?
Do you actually see lightnings at the spark plug cap?

Sorry Fred,
Should have said. XT600E. The coil connections look pretty good although one of the LT leads is just a bayonet connector. I have proofed this pretty well with tape. The HT looks completely sound. After the cut out there seems to be some water in the cap so I think the problem is there.

It only ever cuts out in front of a crowd and usually dries and fires again after about 5 mins.

Are wet misfires like wet farts?

sounds like what i had a couple of years ago. the CDI is up under the tailpiece, and i had a loose connector on one of the plugs that intermitantly vibrated and shorted out, like you say, at the most awkward times!

did you change ignition cable (coil to spark plug) , if it gets old and wet, this is what happens I would say ...

Thanks Guys,

I am thinking it is all or some of the above. I am favouring the HT / sparkplug end of the system as I sorted out (I hope) the CDI before I left. Since I am some miles and a few countries away from the nearest Bike shop I think I was wondering if anyone has any cowboy remedies.

The misfires are definately electrical as they include a barrage of backfires as a prelude to a total cut out - in front of cheering crowd.

Thanks again

George
