Urgent: XT600E Air Filter near Novosibirsk RUSSIA
 

Hi everybody

I need your help.

I'm on my round the world trip and I need an air filter (Original Yamaha or K&N or any other good aftermarket product), that fits in a Yamaha XT600E (3UX, Year 2000).

I have problems with the dust and it reduces my power and nearly doubles my fuel consumption to 10 litres.

My travelling route for the next days in RUSSIA is: Barnaul - Novosibirsk - Krasnoyarsk - Irkutsk - Ulan Ude and after that to Ulanbaatar Mongolia.

Does anybody know, where to get an air filter on my route or has any helpful contacts?

Hi Ulf,

There is a guy called Viktor in Barnaul he runs a bike shop called MotoHaus22 i think.
I think his number is 89039570435, I was there last year with a friend on KTM 690's and he helped us out.
Nice guy but doesnt speak english.
There is also another guy called Andrei but can't find his number at the moment, I'm sure someone will be able to help you with it.

Forgot to mention, we had the gps marks for Viktors garage off Walter Colebatch's waypoints on the HUBB.

Someone else who has been there recently may have better info, but I found a Yamaha dealer with shops in Barnaul and Novosibirsk.

Thanks for your answer.
We visited Viktors garage and also two other garages from Colebatch's waypoint file in Barnaul. Unfortunately, they couldn't help me.

Actually, I'm riding with a self-made filter. I cutted out the paper of the genuine filter and put a TwinAir filter (cutted out from another model) in it, but the carburettor doesn't get enough air.

Try to (gently) clean the stock paperfilter with compressed air, should buy you some time.

Good idea and I've done this before, but since a few days I have no paper left in the frame of the air filter;-) I cutted it out and replaced it with a TwinAir fabric from another bike, but the carb still needs more air...

If you're riding in dusty conditions do not fit a K&N air filter. They are good for air flow but not very efficient at filtering.

Yep +++10000 ^^^^. The very last air filter I would use for any engine is a K&N. The only way to get more flow in a given filter size is to reduce filtering(aka..bigger micron passages through the fabric). The oil that is used is what they use to "filter" the air, it works ok to an extent but not as good as a solid cloth type pleated filter(plus an oil layer?). I'll stick with actual physical filtering. I also use Outerwares filter skins over my filter in dusty conditions. When running/playing in sand dunes I have also run a couple rings of grease(the stickiest I can find) around the inside of the intake runners, after the filter and before the carb, to catch that last little bit that may get through, just have to make sure it doesn't run and go into the carb passages, the sticky stuff works for this

If you find a store with bags for vacuum cleaners maybe you can use this in emergency?

Thought I'd mention that I have fitted PIPERCROSS air filters to both my XT6E's. I am reliably informed a stock OEM XT600 (all models) can take this upgrade without messing around with the carb settings / jets etc.

K&N's require complex re-jetting etc which is the reason I didn't choose them here.

I am also advised this factory made XT600 air filter upgrade gives upto a 5 bhp boost to the standard OEM filter?

I think these Pipercross air filters are British made and are used by most racing/enduro teams. They are made from FOAM.

I'm happy with the result.

I think I paid £40 delivered for mine in 2005.

5bhp? thats 10% from just changing the filter, no thats not possible! I recon if you do filter change, change the exhaust all the way and rejetting you can make 5-7 bhp. I have done this and are using KN, dynojet,lager mainjet and Yoshimura + new larger front pipe exhaust, engine runs perfekt all the way and pulls great.

So yuo get more power but dont have to rejet? doh

You'll get a max of 5hp with a full exhaust system, and airbox/carb mods on our bikes. Theres really not much to gain. The pipercross didnt fit my 2003 model, theres a thread about it in here somewhere.

You dont have to rejet with the K&n either. :thumbup1:

According to Pipercross, fitting one of their filters will increase power by UP TO 5% (note the up to bit). I have certainly noticed the bike is less constrained using this filter and appears to breath better? Or maybe it's just my imagination who knows....

A small 2% is probably more likely...

No need to mess about with re-jetting either.

I prefer to keep the standard OEM exhaust because I have no wish to piss people off I don't know (and who have never pissed me off) with ridiculously loud (and often unlawful) exhaust systems. I prefer not to wake up young children asleep at night..... I can never understand riders who think it's in our interest to annoy people like this.

It's actually unlawful to fit an exhaust system which is considerably louder then the standard OEM fitting. UK law is explicit on this but the police these days tend to ignore it. Riding without baffles is not only unlawful but anti-social too and gives us ALL a bad name.

I suppose fitting a loud exhaust together with a Pipercross would likely increase power by about 5%.

The OEM exhaust is heavy but it is quiet and that pleases me and my neighbours. :innocent::innocent::innocent:

Oh my...:scooter: The louder the better, 2% of 42bhp and you can feel it?The reason you dont need rejetting is because the air isnt doing any difference.. The sound is half of the riding, Yoshimura and Akpropovic has the best sound and neighbours with sleeping problems can plug theur ears! And the sound isnt high of you dont pull the throttle full open, riding slow is just the perfect one syl boff boff:thumbup1:

I am in Irkutsk now and I rode the whole distance from Novosibirsk with my self made "cut-out-paper-put-in-TwinAir-foam" solution. Now it's full of dust andit needs to be cleaned. So, this works on normal roads but it is no solution for Mongolia or Road of Bones.

Actually, I willl try the K&N filter - my friend from Moscow shipped it to Irkutsk by DHL. Maybe I will combine it with an oiled filter skin, if I find some dust in my airbox.

Also, I had a 4 hour cab drive through the city and I found a motorcycle shop, that sells an aftermarket product "HiflowFiltro.com" (part number HFA4608) that is identical to the original Yamaha filter (paper filter). I bought two of them, just in case as a spare part if my K&N experiment fails.
