UK Insurance

Time for renewal, and I have gone for eBike this time - £175 for the two bikes, compared with Bennett's £307. That seems a cracking deal - almost too good to be true. Anyone else used these, and are there any drawbacks? Will I live to regret it?

Not that good a deal - mine was just over £100 (eBike) for the year!!!
That's without any no claims bonus either - you can't be lying enough on your form!!!

Back in the day (apart from the old Norwich Union Rider Policy), we used to get the minimum cover insurance, "Road Traffic Act", which was dirt cheap, but ONLY covered the bare min legal requirements.....

I'm amazed - how did you do that? I live in the cheapest possible postcode, and I am 50+ with a clean licence and 3 years NCD. The only downside for the insurers is that the bike lives in the open on my property and not locked away. Other than that, I should be the best risk going. I thought under 200 quid for two bikes for a year was pretty good.

With your address (Leeds - used to live there) and the bikes in your sig and no NCD, I thought you would be a far worse risk than me.

I've had the Tenere on e-bike for the last two years, this year (it runs out next week) they have gone down from £148 to £132, but Swinton are offering £69.09 plus £25 for legal cover, so will be shopping arround

Thats for only 1 bike, best I found for two was Bennetts at £224 but the K1200s with BMW insurance is only £130 and thats got 4 months still to run.

BDZ - I only insured one bike at a time!

If you had more on your policy then that's not such a bad deal.

MARK.F 24 Dec 2009 19:49

BDZ,I don't know why your insurance is so expensive?I'm 48,L'pool postcode,6 yrs no claims,XT600 & FZ750,both rebuilt valued @ £5,000 fully comp, with Bennetts £150.I could have got insured for both bikes TPFT less than £100,with the previous insurers but they come across as idiots & I'd rather pay more for peace of mind..

Tenere Tom 24 Dec 2009 21:41

My lad (16yo) has been getting quotes for his scooter and they were about £400 he then added Datatag and his quote went up to £450!!!

I don't know if you were just ticking the wrong box somewhere???

Mystery to me too! We're in the same age bracket (supposedly safe, until we start to get doddery around 70 and it starts to go up again), I'm in the lowest postcode bracket (SA62), 3 years NCD, bikes valued at £4k and £1k (guess which!), fully comp. XT has Datatag, Honda has HISS.

I don't really know why I have fully comp - probably habit, instilled by my Dad when I first insured a car. I've never claimed on bike insurance, and only once for a car (serious smack, not my fault), as when you take the excess into account it's hardly worth claiming for the usual minor knocks and scrapes. I probably would be better off with TPFT, but old habits die hard.

Hello,

Ive been with Ebike for at the last 4 years without any problems and have had up to 4 bikes covered on the one policy. The only company I found that was willing to cover more than a couple of bikes. I haven't had to claim on the policy so can't comment on that side of things but all seems to be in order. I would advise against lying about the bikes or yourself on the on-line form remember they could refuse to pay out or reduce the settlement figure accordingly. I'm sure they also automatically covered me for Morroco possibly had to request a Green card??

Best regards Sam

Hi BDZ,

As mentioned before, I have the same bikes as you. I was with Bennetts until November when the renewal quote was £249.00, up from £190 the year before. This is for fully comp, b.t.w. Shopped around and ended up with Devitt at £129 for both bikes. It is the same with a lot of other insurances. There are all sorts of discounts for new business but the good old loyal customer gets shafted. I often wonder if it is the time of day, which day, if there are clouds in the sky etc. which really dictate the premiums.

As has been suggested by others, common experience appears to go with shopping around, but always answer the questions truthfully.

BlackDogZulu 26 Dec 2009 02:23

I would never lie on an insurance form. Not worth it.

Hi Richard,

read the policy very carefully. Unless they've changed their wording recently you'll find that there is no cover in force whilst green laning! Yes you did read that correctly. I discovered this when checking my own policy, so I transferred the cover onto a road bike and put my Serow over to Equity Red Star via Be Wiser.

BlackDogZulu 26 Dec 2009 13:19

Thanks for that - I hadn't checked the wording, but I will do now. It's not a problem at the moment, as work shifts mean that the bike is a commuter only, but it may matter later on in the year.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I moved to ebike about 4 years ago. I have 4 bikes insured on a single policy for my wife, a friend and myself to ride for less than half what I was paying for 1 bike each. I had to claim last year for an own fault accident and they authorised the repairs with no questions and no delay. I've just had my renewal without losing any no claims. Advantages are 365 days a year out of the country (so long as your main address is in the UK) and you can register 2 addresses where the bike(s) is/are normally kept. With my experience of them I would whole heartedly recomend them.
