TTR600 Advice Needed

Hello,
I have just purchased a 1999 Yamaha TTR600 which I'm looking to use for some green lane riding, I'm a little confused at present because after doing some research on models this one seems to be an odd one ?
I999 model TTR600
Fitted with:
Ohlins Rear Shock
Pialo Front Forks
But it's an electric start ?

Any help greatly appreciated and any advice on potential problems with these bikes ?
I could also do with some help obtaining a owners / service manual as I intend looking after the bike myself.

Thanks in advance

Glenn

Hi Glenn , Could you post a pic ? It may be that your bike has had the engine replaced with the E/Start motor - are the engine and frame numbers the same ? You could check the prefix on the frame and engine - mines an '03 frame is ZD prefix and the engine is 5CH , Cheers Glenn ( I know - it's not that common a christian name ! )

Hi Glenn,
I don't pick the bike up until Tuesday but I know that the frame no starts with DJ01 which indicates I believe its a 98 / 99 model, don't have the engine number available at the moment.

Update: Spoke to current owner and details are:
Frame Number: ZDODJ011
Engine Number: 5CH001

Can anyone shed any light ?

IIRC the DJ01 is the kicksstart-only TT600R version with Paoili/Öhlins suspension. I can double check later today.

Could it be your bike had a engine swap at some time in its life?

Regarding the service manual...I've got a English workshop manual lying around. Send me a pm with you email and I'll send it to you.

Hi Mads.M,

That's the info I could find regarding the frame number ?
I'm not sure if its had an engine swap, the engine number also says its a kick start model ? Can these have an electric start conversion ?

You can clearly see it has no kick start and the picture from the other side clearly shows it has a starter fitted ?

PM on its way :-)

My 2001 TT600R is the same model ie. DJ01/5CH.

I don't think there's a difference between the R and RE in regards to frame/engine designation. I suspect a engine swap at some time during your bikes life. Regardless you got the best of both worlds...great suspension AND e-start.

I found this model overview on the German Wikipedia.

I got your pm...I'll mail you the PDF later tonight.

Hi Mads.M,

Thanks for all your help, I will let you know when the email and PDF arrives.

Like you I can only assume a later engine has been fitted and like you it seems I have the best of both :-)

Speak to you again soon.

Kind Regards

Glenn

I sent you 2 manuals, a 1997 TT600R and a 2004 TT600RE manual.

I think they're identical save for the suspension/kickstart in the early one and the e-start in the 2004 version.

Enjoy mate!

While I have your attension do you have any idea what size C spanner is needed to adjust the Ohlins rear shock ?

Cheers Glenn

TT600R Fork Seals ?

Hello again,

Im after more help, I need to renew the fork seals and dust seals on this bike and im trying to find out what size they are ?
Went to a Yamaha dealer earleir and was quoted £36 plus vat per seal and £24 plus vat for the dust seals !

I have found a company called simplybearings.co.uk but they only list the seals by size and not by motorcycle.

Any advice greatly welcome.

Check the rear wheel. If it has cush drive it is a TT600RE. If it has not you have a TTR600 with a e-start engine. Unless someone swapped out the rear wheel.. :-)

Check wemoto.com for fork seals. They probably have them for like ten pounds.

gteps 17 Jul 2014 17:27

Hi G600,

Thanks for the info, I did find Wemoto and saw the seals at a much better price only Im not sure what forks this bike has fitted ?

They appear to have only screw adjusters on the top of the forks which I assume is for preload ?

I wil have a look at the rear wheel in the morning, sadly Im on duty on nights tonight :-(

Cheers

Hi gteps

Try Motoward in the Rudgwick W.Sussex for Yam parts - he's pretty sharp with pricing and has good service.

As far as identifying the bike - your photo seems to show a TT600R framed bike - the give away is the factory welded bracket on the frame for the Ohlins shock reservoir. The T600RE (e-start model) doesn't have this.

Also your bike appears to have the longer front forks - the white plastic fork guard only just reaches the guide on the lower tube, whereas the TT600RE model with the shorter front forks has about an inch of overlap between the bottom of the guard and the guide.

The RE model has different gearing in the gearbox, different final drive ratios, a Cush drive as standard and obviously a battery for the e-start and no kick start with auto decompression. Other than that and the lower quality and height suspension it's the same bike as the R model.

If you have an e-start motor in an R bike, as someone else said you have best of both worlds.

Good luck.
