TT600 and XT600. How different?
 

I am currently in Chile, where my TT600 seems unknown. I will reach Santiago in a few weeks and would like to check there my engine before going North (Bolivia, Peru, ... Canada). I have more and more noise I don't like... Could be the valves, the axis of the piston... I need to go to a Yamaha distributor to open and see. Santiago seems to be the best place.
Does anybody know if the parts from the XT600 (that is more popular in South America) would match with those of my TT600 (2004) ? (piston, valves, timing chain...)

Should all fit as the diffrence between the two engines I know about are the tt has a different airbox.....all mechanical parts are just about the same....if I,m wrong some one will come along shortly and point it out..:oops2:

Engine parts are 99% identical, except for (that is what I know):
- Inlet valves
- Flywheel
- Left engine cover
- Some parts in the gearbox
Bottom end, conrod, piston, rings, barrel are all identical and from later type XT (3TB). Don't let them sell you more expensive "TT" parts if the XT stuff also fits.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds good! Inlet valves could be a problem, but hopefully I will not have to replace them.

Sensible answer - the TT was a rather more expensive (upmarket) version of the XT6E. I understand that TT600's were manufactured after the XT6E's ceased to be made (2003 rings a bell)?

Yamaha sold the first TT600 in '84. Basically the XT6 engine in a more enduro-ish frame. Then production stopped for some time till a mister Belgarda in Italy thought it a good idea to start building enduro-ish bikes based on the XT6 engine. That was in '97 or so. So the TT600E, N, S, R or whatever were born. Made till 2002, all kickstart and with nice goodies on them but with their own problems. Then Yamaha took over again (correct me if I am wrong) with the TT600RE, with the little button.

To my knowledge having had both and doing the topends the parts do fit each other but best done as a matched replacement. I.e. the tt has nikosil liners and a different piston to the xt cast iron liner and piston. But as complete units they are interchangeable. So too valves and cams.

XT6E and Tt600 parts
 

I believe the cylinder is aluminum with a chrome lining in the TT600. Don't know about the piston.
