Travelling with spares
 

Hi guys,

I have one trip to Corsica planned for this year and are in the early stages of planning Belgium to Jordan next. I have a 89 3AJ in great condition and will have it serviced before leaving.

Any "really" bike specific spares I should take ?

before you go check the tension on your cam chain, you might need to take spare folk seals, chain and sprocket set, innertubes, few spokes, oil filters, 1 ltr oil, air filter or buy some foam filters that you can shake out and use again since your going across the sandy stuff, clutch and font brake cables and some tyres. hope this helps.

It's obviously difficult to predict what you may need, but I would deffinatly take spare chain rollers - for top chain run and bottom ron, outer rubber part and inner nylon.

We and a number of other people we met on the road on various XT600's had problems with these due to carrying more weight than usual, even with the pre-load on the rear shock wound right up.

If you have fitted a new shock with a firmer spring this may not be a problem for you, but they are small and light and stop the chain cutting through the frame!

I would also consider taking brake pads as riding in sandy conditionds might go through these quicker than expected.

On our 2 year, 35000 miles trip we carried spare control cables but didn't need them. I wouldn't do that again, I would clead and examine the cables currently fitted and change them if any look less than perfect, and thake an inner cable replacement kit with screw on nipples, having checked that the throttle and clutch nipples in the kit match those on your bike.

I would also carry a spare air filter foam, ready oiled and kit to clean them. If the fitted one becomes so clogged that it affects engine performance, fit the spare and clean the clogged one at the end of the day, when its more convenient.

Not exactly a spare, but if your 3AJ doesn't already have a kick start fitted, fitting one from an earlier XT600 is straight forward and alows you to start the bike with a dead battery/ charging system as the ignition systen (CDI) does not need the battery to produce sparks.

Thanks Mark, really made me think...... looking into the kit start modification.

Just a sugestion on the cables, we have now done 30000 with three teneres and we have had two clutch cables go. The best thing we have seen for it is another biker who taped the spares to the originals, that way they take up no space in luggage.

Hi, I had copies of the chain rollers made from a PTFE type of material and have now don 37000 Kms on them with no problems.
