Tool for adjusting valves

I was wondering where can I purchase the gauge for adjusting the valves it's for a 1990 xt 600 I rather not order but if I have to I will need it asap thanks

ask for a "Feeler Gauge" in any half decent professional tool shop or auto supply store.

Should it be flexable

Yes. A bit of steel 0.01mm thick is almost like kitchen foil, it'll bend easily. They'll usually come as a pack with a faster through like a Swiss Army knife. You build up the number in the manual by adding them together., so 0.03 is made of the 0.01 and 0.02. There is nothing wrong with taking them out of the bundle and only carrying the ones you need. If you need to bend one to get it under the tappet that's fine but only "feel" on an unbent bit. A running fit means slides back and forth with two fingers holding it, but you can feel the drag. Slack is better than tight.

Lots of videos on YouTube.

They're often sold as "Thickness guages"

If you're new to this then I would seriously consider getting a manual and doing some homework because you can easily write-off your motor if you get this wrong.

Using these motion pro feeler gauges are a lot easier than the standard feeler gauges.

If you need to adjust the clearance this cheap tool makes it so easy

Yes I do have a manual. Just educating myself before I do this thank you again for your help

It looks like that timing mark was just off a little when he turned the motor, was that ok tganks

turboguzzi 3 Jun 2021 15:20

crank timing mark not super critical for setting valve clearance, valves stay closed before and after TDC for a very long period.

enough if its "around" TDC while in compression/power stroke.

Ok great thanks for the info

Apart from bikes with auto decompressors on the exhaust cam. These can stay engaged until you just pass TDC. I've seen more than one occurrence where people have set their clearances with the decompressor engaged and made a right mess of things.

So what your saying is go past the Tdc when adjusting valvess

ted, his usa 1990 xt should not have auto decomp.

your generic comment is confusing our guy.

we are in the XT section, not "other bikes" section :)

njenduro - TDC is good enough. see shot from xt manual

I was just looking at the manual for a little more insight on this and then I saw your update. Thanks again
