Tenere 34L. worn kickstart shaft

Hi All,

Whilst window shopping on ebay the romance of old 80's thumpers got me. I spotted a 34L tenere and a short trip and a bit of cash later I now have a tenere sat next to my elefant.
I had on of these tenere's about 10 years ago and just didn't realise what a good bike it was at the time. I wish I had not sold it from my hospitol bed in NDB. ahh the wisdom of hindsight...
My 'new' one is a UK bike and is not bad for 24 yrs old. one thing that does bother me is the kickstart - the shaft is worn where it goes through the clutch cover and the hole in the cover is worn as well. there is about 1mm or 2mm play. some sand or something must have got past the seal and ground away the metal every time it was kicked over.

anyone else had this problem?

any clever fixes?

apart from the oil seep will it do any harm?

cheers

this is what the shaft looks like, imagine how much the softer metal of the hole in the clutch cover has suffered.

Hey there.... Uhmm it looks like it has gotten a lil use but doesn't seem wasted...

The cheapest thing you can do is put a new seal and check if it leaks...

The most expensive is to get another kickstart shaft and another side cover and the new seal....

Hi Subie,

I've just stuck a new seal in for now, there's plenty of clutch covers on ebay in europe, you just need a kindly seller that will send it to you on DHL or something. or find someone who's better at welding....

good luck

Hey there, don't forget to say how the seal worked out ;)

OH have you put a little high temp grease on the gasket? you should put some if the seal doesn't work because that will allow you to remove the gasket without wasting it!

hi there on my 1985 43f the kickstart shaft has up and down play .also the kickstarter cracked on the swivel , when i bought the bike about a year ago the kickstarter was good ,but i dont know about the shaft i had no reason to check it. the reason it all went bad is i had no decompresser cable fitted ,so the extra effort to kick it up defenatly broke the kickstarter . i know have a cable fitted and have welded the crack up , so my advice is always have the decompresser cable fitted and adjusted . my thoughts are the kickstarter and shaft and caseing are not up to the job with out a cable fitted . so the legendary xt do,s seem to have a few flaws, but this is my fault, a new kicker is 75 pounds (outch) , and about 35 on ebay but how wobbly are these , good luck with sorting it take care zigzag:(

Hi Vando,

new seal is OK for now, the hole in the case is worn about 3mm one side. I'm not using the XT on a daily basis but if the seal can't cope with being distorted on every kick then I was thinking to drill the hole and put a sleeve in.
