Ok then so I found the hard way my bike was`nt charging :funmeterno:

Checked the normal things and found my Positive wire (Red) to the rectifier had rotted off,
Easy enough new rectifier.

Still not charging.

Worked my way through the wiring loom to looks for bad connections and found nothing wrong.

So now onto the Stator
Measured the resistance across the three white wires and that came out good 0.03 But the book recomends something like 0.5 ohms.

Does this mean my stators fried? because the the resistance is so low?
I did check that the three wires are`nt connceting to each other.


Any other ideas beefore i splash out on a stator?
Also any recomendations to buy in the UK?

Check the AC output voltage of each white wire - this will tell you if the stator has any output.If you have some good AC from each wire going to the reg,but nothing coming out the red wire....then the reg is faulty.

OK, so i`me getting some ac voltage from the stator but randomly from 1 to 6 volts.
But i`ve found that the 3 white wires from the stator have near perfect comtinuity to each other - Should it?

*edit* - oh and the only voltage i`m getting at the red wire on teh rectifier is same as the battery when the engine isnt running, I,e no change from running to not

Another possible problem I`ve found is,
On the rectifier the 4 way plug had been chopped off, and replaced wit normal crimp on clips.
So does the order of the 3 white wire make any difference, Because i cant tell which one goes where.
I know i`ve got the red in the right place but the whites i`m not sure on.

hi try this with a multimeter test for continuity between the alternator wires 2 at a time thay should all be positive . now test 1 wire at a time with 1 wire conected to the multimeter and the spare multimeter wire to earth the engine is good you should get a open circuit or no reading on the meter ,all this is done with wirers disconnected from the loom . hope this helps , this works for basic alternators . charging probs are a pain good look.

Yes they should have continuity from one to the other - as said by zigzag above - he also says how to test for shorts to earth ..

Umm from your first post - 0.03 ohms ... when the book says 0.5 ohms .. the book maybe using a different tester that does not have the resolution you have?

The order does not matter .. that is why they are all the same colour.

The voltage variation you measured ... was that with the stator open circuit .. err not connected to anything else? I'd expect significantly more voltage than that .. that would be an AC voltage . change the meters function to AC volts! DC volts is on teh otehr side of teh rectifier .. the battery and so on (the rest of the bike) are DC volts ..

Ok now i have sussed out that the "Good" rectifier isnt good :nono:

And thanks to all you lot i now know how to check for it. :cool4:

The stator kicks out a lovely 60v AC but the reg say no no.

So Im getting a new one.

All this hassle to try and save some cash. Oh well
