Starter Solenoid pictures Please!
 

Im currently trying to rewire a 1996 4PT (the first version that still used the 3TB engine) that has previously been used as a field bike had had a very bad home made wiring job. Im using a loom from a 2001 model that I got from ebay but have run into a problem. I bought a new starter solenoid for a 1996 model but it does not apear to be compatible with the connections on the 2001 loom i'm using:(.

The new starter solenoid has 2 wires coming from it but the loom has 4 wires (3 into a connector and one black wire with a male bullet connector, not sure of the colours as im currently away from the bike).
Does anyone have a pic they could post or email me of the area around the starter solenoid/battery so I can check how everything is connected and wether or not I need to order a new solenoid from a later model? I also beleive the fuses are built into the later solenoids?

Any help with this would be appreciated guys including any pics from a 1996 model if possible so I can see the differences.

I have no idea what bike specifically you're talking about, but a starter solenoid is a pretty basic wiring job.

If you have a miltimeter, find the wire which goes to +12v only when you press the starter button. This needs to go to the positive side of the solenoid. If there is a negative terminal, find an earth and use that, though many are earthed through the metal to metal surfaces.

The starter motor itself should have the positive wired direct to the battery, and withh be earthed through the chassis / engine to battery earth strap.

If you don't have a meter, use a bulb and length of wire to the chassis / negative terminal!

Thanks for the reply Dave. The bike is a 1996 XT600e (4PT Model).

I understand the basics of how the solenoid is wired up however I believe that the 1996 model I have used a two wire starter solenoid and a seperate relay/fuse whereas the later models (the wiring loom I have) used a starter solenoid with the fuses built into it hence the different connections.

I was just hoping someone could verify this before I ordered another starter solenoid.:confused1:

On my '03 Xt the 2 fuses sits on top of the starter relay (solenoid?) In lack of correct english word, the thing i'm talking about is between the battery and the starter motor on the + from the battery.

Hi Jens, yes that is the part I am talking about. The starter relay/solenoid (not sure of the correct name for it either!).
Could you tell me how many wires this has connected to it please, or better still would it be possible to take a photo?

It looks like I ordered the wrong starter relay as the 3TB one I have uses a 2 wire connection and so isnt compatible with the 4PT loom that i'm using. Oh well looks like i'll just have to order another one!

There is also a black wire with a male bullet connector right next to the 3 wire connector for the relay, any ideas where this connects too as I cant see anything to connect it too?

The big black wire with the rubbercover over? It goes to the starter motor.

No not that wire. I have the same 3 wires with the white connector that attaches to the relay that is shown in your photo but running down beside them is also a thin black wire with a bullet connector on the end but I cant see anywhere obvious to connect it to?

That thin black wire may be power to an accessory like an alarm

ah, never thought of that.
It does look like part of the original loom but an accessory such as an alarm certainly sound possible. Think ill unwrap the loom and try to see where it goes!

Hi, i couldn't see where i goes, dont think its for an alarm, but dunno.

Have you downloaded the "Yamaha-XT600E-Factory-Workshop-Manual" from this side?

Black wire is probably an earth....
