spluttering!!

When riding the tt600 (83 model) at a certain speed and attempt to get under her and go a bit faster, it starts spluttering, backfiring and carrying on. I've cleaned out the carbie, and put a filter between the petrol tank and the carbie. I also put a new needle and seat on it. Any ideas?

spluttering help

First we need to find out if the problm is fuel, ignition, or mechanical. The easiest way to this is to start with fuel. Using another fuel source ( I am assuming you have some kind of cooking fluid) Rig a hose to the intake and drive until the sputtering starts than add fuel to see if it stops. If it does not improve then the problem is not within the carbs. Let me know this step and then we can move on from there.

Hi jjjs,
Thing is that it is pretty hard to "diagnose" bikes at a distance (I am not the first to say that!).

The more that you can explain what is happening right now and the history of the bike (what has changed to bring on these symptoms and what mileage, service history etc etc) then someone will identify with what you are describing.
You don't say why you thought it may be a fuelling problem; it could also be caused by an electrical fault.
However, there is nothing wrong in getting everything on the bike in correct order, clean carb etc as you already mention - also worth checking all of the electrical connections for good contacts & the exhaust is not leaking + the inlet ducts between the carbs and the cyl are not split or otherwise leaking + .............

There are quite a few posts in here about engine mis-firing problems, many in the XT forum but more elsewhere; you can find them by doing a search for relevant key words.

Good luck,
