Speedo part 2

Hello,

Finally managed to get speedo cable fitted and annoyingly it has made no difference. I have now diagnosed that the speedo drive on the front wheel is faulty and need to replace it.

Does anyone have one of these to fit a xt600e 2004ish that they can sell me? Yamaha part is typically extortionate and with a very long wait to boot.

I guess there is no way of repairing a faulty speedo drive unit. When I twiddle the cable the speedometer responds (the needle moves) so I am certain it is the unit on the wheel that is to blame.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks a lot,

Biggy

Have you taken it apart and had a look at what's wrong?

Usually it's just a simple bevel drive with a couple of lugs which locate on the wheel, driving the gears as the wheel turns.

You might find the lugs worn or bent, in which case a new one can me made / weld up the old one. I'd be very surprised if the gears are mashed.

The gears are often a plastic worm drive, which can strip if the cable becomes pinched or the clocks fail. Cheap solution would be to fit a digital bicycle speedo - that's how I ran my Bandit 400.

My lugs on the front needed to be bent into place and then the speedo worked again, take it apart and clean all the grease off and re bend the lugs,re grease and it will be fine....jeiger

Thanks

Thank you for your replies. I will have a crack at taking it off and seeing if I can reshape the lugs.

Thanks again,
Biggy

Just had this issue on my 3tb. It was worn through a lot of miles and was beyond saving or so we thought, managed to get one off of ebay second hand.

The metal part that the cable sat in was worn to a circular shape rather than the square of the cable end. Not sure if it's a different part but it didn't seem rebuildable?

Replacement speedo drive

Hello,

Took everything off and I am fairly sure that the speedo drive has had it. The piece with the lugs on just spins freely and fails to operate the gears, although the cable does make them turn.

Does anyone have a spare speedo drive I could buy or know of a good source for a second hand one to fit a late (04?) XT600e?

Thanks,
Biggy

Would an xt660 2004 speedo drive fit a 2004 xt600e?

Thanks,
Biggy
