rumbalings from within
hi all
lataly i have noticed my 02xt600e has developed some kind of routhional rumdal/clunk from the gear box area. noticed most from 30mph down in or out of gear cluth in or out engine runing or not I have been meaning to fit new cush rubers and bering due to lash? but canot see that being all. the bike has done just over 20000m and well looked after. has any one noticed the same or smalir? any thoughts would be good. thankyou |
Umm....
Check your oil level - I had a bit of an issue with mine. I ended up having to change the piston and barrel. If it sounds like a rumbling it's a bearing problem and if it's knocking it could be piston slap (like I had:() Good luck!!! |
I know what you mean oil level is ok im pedantic about that and ive just changed it right amount came out. The problemis i think from the drive line or tranmision as it hapens when the engin is of and out of gear.

Strange this. XT's are usually pretty bullet proof..
So, its basically lower engine noise !! Does it happen when the bike is idling in neutral ?? Even with the clutch lever pulled in ??? Sounds like lay shaft or crankshaft bearings or maybe the starter clutch is catching.. Really hard to say without seeing/hearing it. You're really best off letting a mechanic listen to it for a diagnosis. |
hi thankyou for the reply
there is no nose when at idel and it happens with the cluth in in or out of gear and it happens with the engine off out of gear so freewheeling. can any one tell me if the only thing turning when freewheeling is the lay shaft the one with the drive sproket on? not as sure about bike as i am land rovers. would the balance shaft turn when free wheeling? i plan to get some one in the no to have a look as soon as pos. the worst thing is i may have to put a planed trip to spain on hold:( jim |

The balancer will turn constantly... It sounds like a bearing... either the clutch bearing or the the gearbox bearing. I think the counter shaft bearings are ok as you still get the when the counter shaft isnt turning. With a situation like yours, its impossible to make guesses over the internet... I would check the clutch first as its the easiest to access without splitting the engine ! http://www.vf750fd.com/blurbs/Image8.gif This is a good site I used for reference while I was doing my training a few years back... hi there if it makes a noise with the engine off and freewheeling is it possibal the chain is out of alinment ,try undoing the front sprocket nut and then retighting it , is the front sprocket ok ,also the chain ,make sure there are no seized links it maybe something on the outside, not the engine. good luck zjgzag

Wait a min....
Does this only happen when the bike is rolling ??? As in, if the bike is stationary and you rev the engine, does it make the noise ?? Clutch in and out (when in gear) ?? |
hi
thats a helpfull diagram thankyou. it hapens as long as the bike is moving. not when stopped even if you rev it. it is most notable when you have the engine of out of gear cluth in or out. so all that is turning will be the counter shaft and final drive? final drive is ok. I hope to get a bike mechanic to test ride it tomorow. Jim |
Check your clutch cable adjustment... If that doesn't change anything pull the clutch cover and have a look and see if anything looks weird or out of place.
|
Well if it doesnt happen when the bike is stationary, its going to drive chain related...
Chain too lose/tight, work chain & sprockets or if you're very unlucky.. the counter shafter bearings. |
Mine made a consistent clank when engine braking at low speeds. Naturally I procrastinated and ignored it.
It turns out it was the CS sprocket nut; it had fallen off (stripped!) at some point and eventually the sprocket started to loosen causing a knocking noise. |
This might be worth checking as the symptoms you describe are the same as a slightly overtightened drive chain.
Bearing in mind that chains don't stretch evenly & sprockets have some degree of runnout. It's possible the chain has been adjusted when at it's slackest, & when the wheel is rotated to the chain's tightest, it's too tight. Check by sitting someone on the bike & as it's rolled slowly forward(or backwards) over one wheel revolution, stop every few inches & check the chain tension. Adjust the chain when at it's tightest point. |
Hi all
thankyou for the advice after roling the bike around a bit i noticed the chain had tight or higth spot. So in the future in sted of cheking it if in dout ill just soak it over night rinse and check it in the morning. doing this has made huge diferance even though i do it once a mounth if not more any way. all sounds ok for the mo will get out on a long run when get chance see if its ok. jim |
