rubber carb joints

my '97 XT600E has a small black plastic box bridging the two rubber joints between the carbs and the engine.
1. what is this, what does it do?
2. will the bike run ok without it?

im asking because the rubber has split at the top of one of the joints, where the wire clip has worn through it. i can repair it but not if i have to keep the box too. i have a microfiche of earlier models and they do not have this box.

Should run fine without it providing you pulg the holes. I've never seen one of those on a 4-stroke. ussually on 2-strokes, Its purpose is to add volume to the intake runners this helps with low end power. Does it look original or like somthing that was added on.

hi winston,
its definately a designed in thing, im thinking it maybe something specific to a country, like in california you need spark arrestors in the exhaust.
my bike is an import from africa, it has (had!) one of these strange plastic boxes under the seat as part of the air inlet, one across the carbs as described, and a spark arrestor in the end of the exhaust. ive changed the exhaust and done away with the air inlet contraption and the bike runs fine, so i think im gonna do away with this one too, and just bung the holes

Hi there dave!

Just a thought, but from my experiance the plastic is there as a heat sync

between the HOT cylinderhead and the relitively cooler carbs..... to stop evaporation problems in hotter(AFRICAN)climates!!!:confused1: Admittedly I have seen this more in Petrol4x4 vehicles..... My advise is to remove it, block the ports and run test it??? Don't see why it should'nt work... Let me know how it goes.....

Happy trail'ing

purification of exhaust gases

Hi,

I guess this thing is for purification of exhaust gases.

I did put once an inlet for the airbox from a bike like that on an older XT 600 E 3TB and the bike hat cut outs and did run really bad.

Otherwise I did put a engine from the same bike with that funny box in an 1VJ model and it did work fine.

regards

Thomas
