River crossing problems - T off the carb breather pipes?
 

Hi all.

I have a problem with my ’05 TT600RE. When I cross a river that is maybe knee deep, the engine starts to miss and then shuts off. Sometimes it will fire up again and run for a few seconds, but sometimes I have to push the bike out of the river. After maybe one minute on dry land, the engine starts up and runs normally.


The engine runs flawlessly in heavy rain, so I don’t think it is electrical.

I suspect I need to do “T off” the carb breather pipes. So I need to know:

The big breather pipe ends in this black plastic thingy. Is this some kind of a filter? Should anything connect to it? Do I have to re-locate this black thingy after I “T off” the carb breather pipes?

Try mounting the ends of the carb breather tubes above the engine, under the fuel tank so that they are above the level of the water, that way they will 'breath' easier and wont suck in water..

Interesting, do you mean I could simply reroute the current tubes? No need to put in the T-connectors? That would be great.


But I wonder, if it is that simple, do you know why most recommend installing the T-connectors and have one tube end dangling below the engine, and the other tube end fixed under the gastank?

The "T" will allow the carbs to breath when lower is under water, (so the tee'd off bit will be under the tank & dry) and also let it drain any excess fuel off.
As for that plastic bit - its called a "carburettor suction pipe" !!!!! No extra bits come off it. So may well be worth adding a pipe to it & routing it up higher & see if that helps??? I was wondering if its some sort of valve thing thatb shuts off - like a ball in it or something?

I have some news. It looks like the TT600RE COMES WITH THE T-MOD (T off) ALREADY DONE. When I was about to do the T-mod tonight, I found a T-connector on one of the breather tubes, right above the carburetors. The tube that goes under the seat (from the T-connector) was pinched and completely blocked. Sloppy workmanship during assembly at the factory I’m sure.

This may explain why I have not found any posts from TT600RE owners regarding this problem. The TT600RE comes with the T-mod from the factory, it was just my bad luck that my bike had this assembly fault.

PLEASE DO CORRECT ME if I am misunderstanding something here. Looking at the pictures, can the T-connector and the tube under the seat be something else than the T-mod?

G600 - that interesting matey. I had noticed that pipe under the seat of my bike too..... now I know what it is.
Tonite, I ran my bike & stuck me thumb over the end of the "suction" thingy ( as in your second photo at start of this thread). Nothing happened?! Even revved it a few times with it blocked - nothing?

Thats because the lower drain end won't be blocked, try putting the bike in a deep pond then block the top pipe and that should confirm that its a factory fit higher breather as wanted by G600.

Fit a T-piece close to the carb, leave one hose routed as normal, route the other upwards and in to the top of the airbox, ensures that the carb will always be able to breathe as at least one hose is able to vent.

Check out the KTM forum on Thumper Talk, there's a good tutorial with pics etc. Also a common mod on the DRZ400E with the Keihin flatslide carb, not sure if it applies to the S model though?

I did test the bike in water today. A few small river crossings and some splashing in a lake. The bike ran perfectly.

So I am 95% sure the problem has gone away, but I need several trouble free big river crossings before I can be 100% sure. For now I believe that the t-connector and the tube under the seat is indeed the T-mod, done by Yamaha (on TT600RE's). Good stuff if true.

The TT600RE comes from the factory with the T-mod already done !! No wonder I found nothing about this TT600RE problem on the HUBB/ADV.


I went for a ride yesterday and did lots of river crossings. Nothing too big, but certainly enough to make the bike sputter/die if the problem was still there. I had no problems at all.
